Firstly, I take issue with you basically alluding that the torque dip either doesn't exist or is a non-issue. It has been highly documented and is easily observable.
Secondly, I take issue with the chip on your shoulder. That's about it. |

AT driver here - The torque dip is there, no question about that, but the AT does a job of making it feel less so - in default mode it shifts up right in the middle of the dip, which feels like a natural point to shift, and in doing so it keeps fuel consumption decent while still giving the car a decent bit of go as you climb through the gears.
In Sport shift mode, you can feel the power coming back on after 4500rpm, and then the car has some real go until you bump up against the 7k shift point. My pet peeve right now? In AT Sport mode, once you hit the speed limit on most roads it tends to hang onto one gear too low (usually 3rd) at 4-5k rpm, and I have to blip up to put it into a sensible gear. This could be solved by increasing the speed limits, but I don't think my state government is going to be willing to listen to that petition. |

something that actually bothers me about the car:
the seat belts in the back flap like crazy when I drive with windows open, they make a lot of noise I could probably solve it easily but I only tend to think about it when it is happening |

Drive around the dip, it's not perfect. It's a non-issue. No chip, just amused buy the people who blame the car for their shortcomings, and spend long green on "fixing" the car. On second thought, perhaps it is a "chip" related to age. Being 50, I'm long past blaming the equipment or using it as a penis enhacement. Is there a sub forum for old farts to laugh at the crowd who feel the need to rice out this car, but who don't spend a minute or dime on driving skills, sorry, "skillz"?

The "torque dip" hardly bothers me at all now.
I've got used to the schitzo nature of this magnificent car, and I've learnt to drive around that. I either tootle around in "calm and gentle" mode below 4000rpm, or cross the torque divide once and "give it horns" keeping it between 5000 and 7500rpm. I said "hardly bothers" because I still get a bit frustrated if I have to gear down several cogs to get enough grunt for quick overtaking when necessary. But that's OK, because it's more than balanced out by what's great.

Age has nothing to do with it.. I'm 60, older than dirt and I'm learning things on here from the younger crowd all the time. These young'ins can learn you a thing or two if you would open your mind a bit. While I think many on here take things to the extreme.. Its interesting to see the results from all these mods... And this car was made to be modded.. I like it as it is just out of the box... But many on here want more... So what's wrong with that? Kudos to the very capable younger generation..

I find, in stock form, 2 modes of driving. 1 where you just drive in town and shift at 3-4000rpm. You hit the dip and you shift. Mode 2 is race mode and you shift at the red line and you make sure you`re in the right gear.
If you try mode 1.5, well you shift at 5000 and land right in the torque dip and your pissed hehehe. |

I love my GT86, the way it looks, feels and drives. I think it's the most thrilling and exiting car I have ever driven, and I have driven some very cool cars. I am a proud and happy owner.
I can't believe there's 50 pages of people complaining about cup holders and what not. |
