HRTROB,

Have you tuned your car already? Did you reflash the ECU or did you go the piggyback route like the Unichip? Thanks.

By they way guys if you're installing an aftermarket head unit, use a Toyota wiring harness adaptor and Lexus antenna adaptor so that everything will be plug and play - no wire splicing whatsoever
Aux input?

Google Maps on my iPhone does not do turn by turn. Just a useless preview.

Apple Maps naman... I dont want to end up "inside" Muntinlupa.

Are you using AppRadio 2? I am looking at AppRadio 3 that was announced this week. I prefer the model without the DVD/CD component.

But the Kenwood that Nik uses is a big sell kaso this video shows the Kenwood you need to control the interface via the iPhone rather than direct to the stereo. My preference sana was to plug the phone and tuck it away and control every function and app through the headunit.

I am wondering with the iPad being so thin, light and responsive why cant headunits be as trim as well. I read the Kenwood weighs a good 2.6kg and costs more than an iPad. Not against anyone on ft86club but I just find it really really odd.

Alabang BRZ;

The reason why car head units are heavy and bulky is because of:

1. The cd/dvd unit component which contains the reader motor, loading/unloading mechanisms, etc.. Although some people no longer use the cd on their units, a lot of people still do as music in CD/DVD format still sounds better than MP3 format because of the differences in compression. Same with video.
2. The built in amplification components which are needed to power a minimum of 4 speakers at a level of at least 5 watts RMS each.
3. Cooling components such as heat sinks and fans which are needed because of the offshoot of the amplification process.

If the Ipad was made to have a CD/DVD reader and power 4 speakers without external amplification, it would weight more and just be as bulky as the common touchscreen car head unit and cost a lot more than what it already is.

If you want to make your tablet as your head unit, a lot of people have already done this. The key is the audio output of the tablet is plugged into an amplifier so that it can power the car speakers.

For reference:

Hope this helps.

I'm running a Unichip plug and play piggyback on mine. So far, so good

My head unit is a Pioneer AVH-X5550BT which has AppRadio 2. Yup you can use Waze with any head unit that has RCA AUX INPUTS. I use it on my other car that way. You will need a composite video out cable for your iOS device. I don't think it will work though if you have an iphone 5.

Try using Waze, it gives real time traffic info like average speeds on a particular stretch of road, accident, hazard and police warnings, and yes it does turn by turn navigation. Not bad for a free app, I prefer it over iGO Primo I have in my other car. It even works outside Metro Manila. I've already used Waze's turn by turn navigation in Bacolod. Works great!

Thanks for the info. How much WHP was gained from the Unichip tuning alone without intake and exhaust modifications?

i had my horn replaced at autokozmetix, they didn't remove my bumper. it was harder to install w/o removing the bumper, but its possible to do and mas sure for me since hindi gagalawin yung bumper.

[ame="http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=quj8tsnNEwc"]Toyota 86 dyno - Milltek Full System Resonated, Afe Takeda Intake - YouTube[/ame]

Autoplus Dynojet
Ambient temp 36-37C
Humidity 54%
Both runs done on the same day, 30 minutes apart

Baseline: 152whp 127tq (stock ecu, stock intake, Milltek overpipe, front pipe, resonated catback)

With Unichip and Afe Takeda dry intake, Milltek overpipe, front pipe, resonated carback: 162whp 134tq

Gained about 10whp and 7tq. Not bad since the intake is known to produce only 5hp based on numerous dynos posted in this forum. With a little tweaking some power can still be squeezed out, as it was running richer than the stock tune. Will do another dyno run once the headers are installed

Ecutek is great and has obviously more potential, but it costs more and inolves flashing the ecu, something I am not comfortable with, having previously bricked two PC motherboards trying to flash the BIOS. Plus you can resell the unichip and recoup some of your money, something you can't do with ecutek

HRTROB,

Thanks for sharing your data. The baseline seems a little bit low at 152whp with stock ecu, stock intake, Milltek overpipe, front pipe, resonated catback. I've seen completely stock setups baseline from 168 - 172whp which is more in line with a 15% drive train power loss from the 200hp. Does this mean that the addition of the overpipe, front pipe and resonated catback on a stock ecu actually generated less power than stock setup? Even after installing the Unichip, the 168 whp is just like back to stock which seems to show that the addition of overpipe, frontpipe and different catback didn't add any power. Or can the variance be attributed to the differences in the types of dyno's used and testing conditions? Thanks.

I agree, baseline was pretty low. But this is because the runs were done on a dynojet, which reads lower than Speedlab's dynapack. The extremely high ambient temps also played a factor - dyno was back in April, middle of summer. There were three of us who dynoed that same day. 86 all stock except for TRD axleback pulled 152whp, and the other guy pulled 157whp 134tq and his 86 had the same Milltek over pipe, front pipe, resonated catback, but with Injen intake and Ecutek tuning. All of our cars were M/T, running Petron Blaze and the dealer Toyota 5w30 mineral oil.

168whp all stock on a dynojet is wishful thinking here in Metro Manila Patch from Autoplus showed us the baseline of their BRZ, only pulled 159whp
