Parking brake is a drum brake. It makes noise. Nothing is wrong with your car, you're fine.

Translation: I left my parking brake up when I pulled away. So there's more than one way...but neither's going to be covered under warranty. |

NY? I'll need a mortgage by end of summer.
I remember once when I worked at FedEx this guy did his whole route with the parking brake engaged. I don't know how he didn't notice the smell but god was it potent when he pulled in. |

This. My car has always done this, it's a parking brake.

As mentioned, the parking brake is just a drum brake. The drum brake uses two half-cylinder shoes that are hinged on one side and pushed apart at the other side to wedge against the inside of the "drum". The pins that keep the shoes aligned rest in elongated holes to allow for this odd movement. It is not precision device, and it's certainly not designed for repeated high stress abuse.
The clunking you're hearing is either completely normal (I've heard it in multiple cars with drum brakes, even normal disc brake pads can clunk from fore/aft movement), or it's caused by excessive slop that you've worn into the mechanism. Either way, I can't blame the dealer for not replacing everything because it's a system only meant to be used while already stopped, not while gently rolling to a stop, or while hooning. I'm sure it's not the mechanic's first rodeo, they see the gamut nearly every day and they can certainly decipher the difference between normal wear, anomalous wear, and abuse. Remember, the 86 is still just a passenger car, not a purpose built competition drift car with a high leverage hydraulic brake system specifically designed to lock the rear wheels. Solution? Either A- ignore the sound and keep on keepin' on, and perform frequent inspections and replace parts yourself as needed, or B- Stop misusing the handbrake for hooning. Oh, and nobody is buying the "only a few times" BS... |

You know it's a winner when the thread gets exciting with talk of mortgage origination.
