Make sure the window tint guys have experience installing vinyl overlays. Two different types of material!

has the material changed? looking at the WRB tail lights in the first post it looks dull while the one 2 posts above looks absolutely stunning!
i'm trying to decide if i should go for the red cut out on the WRB 2 posts above or a red cutout with both the red and the cutout area smoked.. is that even a possible comibination? edit: can you PM me the instructions? i saw the one that came out horrible a few pages back but jjust wanting to see if i'll be capable of doing this or not haha |

Some look glossier than others, but I think it's more an effect of the light/camera. If you aren't sure about doing it, I recommend getting someone else to apply the vinyl. I did my 2010 STi lights myself, and they came out pretty good...learned a lot doing it. But these are a different beast. I think they'll just frustrate you if you aren't really familiar with applying vinyl.

if it's just lighting that's not reassuring as i don't want it to look dull at all in any lighting. or is that a limitation of using vinyl? i'd rather see the instructions first before i decide if someone else does it. |

As far as I can tell, it's the nature of the beast with vinyl. My roof is glossy black and really shiny. But the see through vinyl for tails and fogs do make it a bit matte (same with my last car). I think the only way to get that "crystal clear" look is to either buy the JDM lights that are actually red plastic, or pay to get them painted. That looks awesome, but much more expensive. Just to note, I have also used another company's vinyl (either Rockblocker or LaminX) on my WRX fog lights and it also looked somewhat dull.
I'm sure Andy can get you a copy of the instructions, but it's pretty basic and not specific to any model. Something along the lines of using dish soap and water in a bucket and a spray bottle, and use a heat gun to make the vinyl pliable. Clean everything really well beforehand. The thing that installers will have that most people don't is a 3M "primer" and I can't recall the number for it. But it's kind of like a glue and will make all the difference in the world since the top edge of our lights hits a little step and you can't just tuck it around the back. If it's not held down REALLY WELL, it will pull up along the top. You can still pull it up, so it's not like cement. I don't mean to say you shouldn't try it, or you can't do it. Just sharing the little bit that I picked up hanging out with the installer several times.

can you do a smoke redout but leave the turnsignals just smoked? If so, would the application be smoke then red overlay?

Start with the red/cutout then a full layer of smoke over it all.

I think ideally, you'd give a few days in between layers. That's how we did it on mine. And with a heat gun, it should form fine over the cutout edges. But I'll let someone who actually installs chime in to verify.
