But Some of them are only a few years old, they have license plates etc. - there's no way that they were crash tested or whatever it takes to legally bring them into the states. There are so many different ones.

On top of that, there are also a decent amount of Skylines (R32s/R33s) around here. They aren't fancy or fixed up, they're usually just regular ole GT-STs and what not. I don't know if Mississippi just doesn't really care enough to do anything about it or what. Any ideas?
I think farm vehicles are excluded in general.

Some skylines are legal, most are not. You can register them in certain states as I already said, however, if a federal DOT agent sees it they can take it and crush it.

And we don't really know what is totally missing from the 86 to the FR-S...some of the features could be options...hopefully. A lot of people want a loaded FR-S to match up to the loaded 86.

But what we do know that is missing from the base FR-S shown last week to what was shown on the Toyota 86 is.

HID front headlights
LED DRL's integrated into the headlights
Frame-less review mirror
Telescoping Steering wheel
Dualzone HVAC
Push button start
Leather\Alcantra seats
leather inserts on the door panels.

Your right, definitely not worth it. Better to get the parts for way less than a few grand to make a FRS look exactly like a 86.

look man I can see the appeal of owning a JDM vehicle and all, but currently that's a pipe dream that won't end anytime soon

trust me it would be waaaay less expensive to just buy an FR-S, re-badge and source the parts to do a full RHD conversion it will be much easier and less painful to your wallet

FR-S front bumper looks a bit different compares to 86. FR-S is a bit more fluidic while 86/GT86 is more edgy and aggressive.
To OP, you can always order JDM style bumper and from aftermarket stores, why need to import the car all the way from Japan anyway? I'm sure someone will find a way to bring JDM parts to the state to make big money.

I could be wrong though, but they look different to me. I think it's probably because of the lighting and lacks of fog and DRL headlight.

Front bumper covers are the same. From someone who has dealt with RHD vehicles in the US, it's a pain to DD. Just get the German headlights (German cars are LHD,so the headlights will point in the correct direction, but they typically get the fully optioned cars like Japan does), and wait for someone to wreck a BRZ to get your center stack HVAC controls, etc. Then order some JDM badges and you're set. The difference in exhaust is likely just tips. Save some money there and get a nicer aftermarket unit.

If you're really set on having a "JDM" looking car, that route would still be cheaper than trying to import one, which you cannot do, since federal importation laws state that a vehicle is ineligible for importation if the same or substantially similar model is available here.

I meant to mention... Wanting to import a JDM 86 would be insane. No point in it at all.

I was just curious about the importation stuff as I'm starting to see more and more JDM vehicles.

Actually there is a smaller diameter due to regulations of the US (already been stated)

What kind of regulation is that? (And why does it apparently not apply to diesel 4x4s?)
