What tires for autox?
Tires for my 2800lbs scion frs. Dunlop zII's 245/40/17 91w SL 200aa, 26lbs, 9.2" tread width, $183, or michelin pilot super sports 245/40/17 95y XL 300aa, 23lbs, 8.5 Should I be concerned with the weight of the tire?

Yes you should be at least a bit concerned by the weight of the tire. I recommend BFG Rivals.

Why not a street legal autocross specific tire like Falken Azenis RT615K?

If you're running on stock wheels, I would recommend the Hankook RS3s in 225/45/17s. Very light, grippy and popular.

Depends on your driving style. If a tire needs to FEEL good to you, get the ZII or something with a stiff sidewall. If you can deal with a softer sidewall for better overall grip, get the RS3.

the Azenis wouldn't even make the top 5 of today's tires. Driving on them with intenet to compete would be futile. Would make a solid summer tire though. the Rivals seem to be the top choice at the moment. The price is right too.

Rivals, Z2's and RS3's seem to be the favorites right now.
I love my Z2's, but I haven't driven the rivals or RS3's so I can't give a good comparison. RS3's are softer sidewalls, and will need more camber under hard cornering. They're also not as good in the wet if that matters to you. They are a fair amount cheaper though. Another thing to consider is if the class has a treadwear minimum. Some local classes here require a minimum of 200 for street classes, so RS3's run against R comps and slicks.

Continental Extreme Contact DW - lighter than anything mentioned, cheaper than anything mentioned, and excellent grip.
General G-MAX A/S 03- light as the DW, cheaper still, but not as popular or nearly as well tested. Excellent UTQG, good grip, rigid sidewalls. |

OP, what are you intentions at Autocross? Are you in it to win it, or are you just looking to have a good time? The two tires you listed are sort of in different categories.
Tires like the Z2, RS3, and Rival are listed as extreme performance, meaning while they provide an excellent amount of grip and feel, they can be slightly brutal as a daily driver. Some people don't mind this, but you might. Something you might want to take into consideration. I daily drive Star Specs, and I don't mind the stiff sidewalls or noisy-ness of them. As for tires like the PSS or Conti DW, they don't have the absolute performance of the other tires, but they have adequate levels of performance and are much more tolerable as DDs. Everytime I ride in my friends car with DWs, I think man this is nice. I can't speak of the PSS but I hear nothing but good things about them as far as being an everyday performance tire. As I have separate race tires for Autocross, I plan on a set once the Star Specs go.

While I have stock rims only, I plan to run PS3's simply because they have plenty of tread. When I get a set of dedicated track rims, I'll be using the RS3's. My buddy has been running them on his M3 for awhile and LOVES them.
