In case anyone else is interested, Hodges Subaru in ferndale has 2 service parts deals you may want to know about... not sure if this is just Hodges or corporate wide...

http://www.hodgessubaru.com/specials/parts.htm

3 Oil filters and 3 Crush Rings for $18.69

or

1 Oil filter, 1 crush ring, and 5 quarts of OE synthetic oil for $41.18 ... edit: oop, just realized the deal states 5W-30

and offer expires today.

Side note, I'll be doing the 3 filters and rings when I drop my car off today to get the tail light fixed (condensation issue) and replace my windshield (Rock nailed the corner of the windshield on my way to work yesterday and it's already spidered out, so ticked off) and also talk to them about how weak the dampers are getting already.

Doesn't our car take 6quarts anyway? (or is it 5.5?) That would be a really good deal if it was for the right spec oil.

You guys might want to keep a close eye on your cars. I have a few paint chips on my left front fender that were starting to rust already. I got the rust cleaned off and will be putting touch-up over them this evening, but the paper thin paint and winter are cause for caution.

I think the manual says 5.5 qts.. but I've been good at 5 each time I've changed my oil.

I'll probably get 6 just to be on the safe side. Its better to have extra left over than not enough.

Why is choosing an oil so hard? It's making my head hurt trying to figure out the right oil for me. My car will be pretty much a daily driver. It's going to be parked in the winter and will be taken to 1 or 2 track days a year.

I'm thinking about getting something like Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 and calling it a day.

Edit: Or Eneos 0W-20. It seems to have a good reputation.

I agree.

5.5 is definitely too much.
5.1 is more like it.

I think it's smart to buy 6 qts.. but what I'm saying is that you probably won't need to add all 6. Put in 5 qts, give it a minute to drain and settle and then check your dipstick level.. if you're comfortable between the high and low marks then you're good.. if you're not.. then add more oil.

For me.. both times I've changed the oil so far.. I checked after adding the 5th quart and found that the oil level was dead on in the middle.. so I was happy with it and didn't crack open the last quart.

I've been using mobil 1 0w-20. You're right.. it's very hard to know what oil is the best. Since I don't really track my car (the most I would do is some autocross) I think the Mobil 1 is fine.. and it's very affordable!

I picked up 6 qts of Eneos 0W-20 (~$55) from the NAPA in Romulus, planning on changing it this weekend if my Fumoto valve gets here in time. I suspect that the oil choice doesn't really make that much of a difference given how widely opinions vary but oh well.

Make sure it is the Japanese version of the filter and not the NA version of the filter, one is blue (NA) and one is black (JPN) and there is a massive difference in quality.

Im pretty sure they use blue/black to visually error proof the filters which are meant to be mouted top of engine (blue w/ closure mechanism) or bottom of engine (black = open). I always have black for the WRX and blue for the BRZ. Both are USDM part numbers.

Well we should get our hands on one of each and cut them in half to confirm that they aren't of differing internal qualities.

Only a couple more days.. last time it was bitter cold outside.. but still fun as we had like 7 GT86's there. Lots of amazing cars were there. I imagine there will also be a great turnout this time.
