Weird..
SCION in the west Coast has already started taking Orders... East I haven't heard anything. And this is confirmed information because SCION has been contacting people about it. I saw SCION's FB asking people out west to contact them if they are interested on the west so ... they're probably already started.

But how is this arranged then? Do you agree to buy one at any price? You dont even know what it's gonna cost or which options you want on it?

The pre-order is intended to provide a dealership with an order forecast and a small deposit shows the intent of people such as myself. A deposit can be reimbursed depending on the state you live in. In MN, until you literally sign the paperwork purchasing the product, a buyer can back out at any point in time.

(I work for a Motorsports dealership and speak from experience when I state this)

As my dealership does, so does Scion. I have already sold a motorcycle that hasn't even come out yet because we ordered the motorcycle per customer requirements.

I have a fantastic relationship with the Scion dealer I'm buying from (again), and as we move forward, we will sit down and check off simple things such as color and transmission. I will get the base radio and least amount of options from the factory so there isn't a delay in production.

Remember it takes longer at a McDonald's to get a custom order. I always get the Big Mac so I can get outta there.

Interesting thread. I am on the fence. Still want to wait for more info on price/options for the FR-S before I go and make a deposit.

There is absolutely no reason to pre-order this thing... Lucky this is a Scion because once the dealer has your money, what haggle room do you have left? The first rule of auto shopping is to NOT want what you buy or seem like it at least, the second rule is you don't talk about the first rule! LOL

The culture of pre-order scares me a lot and I work retail...

It's Scion, traditional buying tactics are meaningless.

I completely agree with your rules, but I only pre-ordered because there isn't a risk for where I live and for Scion's Pure Price structure.

Also, more dealerships are converting to a clerk-style environment instead of a trained salesperson. Internet/Surgical shopping has helped feed this style of a pre-informed customer. Because of this, I don't care if they want to talk me into this 'fantastic opportunity' or 'doodad rust prevention'. I have the ability to walk away with my deposit in hand if I'm dissatisfied.

I have a suggestion for your 3rd rule:

'Always have a backup plan if shit hits the fan'

ie...annoying clerk, deal miscommunication, or my favorite---

Queen Family Truckster switcheroo.

So is it odd I may have put a deposit on this car without official pricing being released? Or is it more odd that you haven't placed conditional deposits to secure your FR-S...

I'm not looking to aggravate anyone or say you should put a deposit down, I'm just explaining logic for my decision. This is why we have informational threads.

I stopped in at a local dealer yesterday. Sales lady bordered on clueless when I said I wanted to be on the list, starts jabbering about how much people like their Scions, etc, like I was just browsing the lot or something. Anyway, she did surprise me about knowing what the FR-S was, and went to talk to someone (I assume to see if they were managing a waiting list).

Well, she comes back with some long story about how the availability is delayed due to disruptions from the Tsunami (on a car that hasn't started production yet. wtf.). Anyway, she takes down my info and says she'll call me in February to come in and give a deposit. The entire time I was talking to her I never really had confidence that she knew what she was talking about.

Um, I've seen MANY concept cars (or even concept 'special editions' of production cars) than never make it into production.
