We just finished another local customers car fitted with our turbo kit and wouldn't you know, this problem is showing its ugly face... P0017 along with a random misfire once it gets too rich.

What was the solution? Remove turbo and bring to dealer? I can't imagine the turbo is causing that code which is showing up / being repaired under warranty for stock cars.

Yes, in our case it happened about 2000 miles before the turbo kit.

Not yet **knocks on every piece of wood within 10 miles**
I'm only at less than 3000 miles still. I'll be switching to 10W-40 when I get the car back, that's for sure.

Speaking only of another manufacturers VVT pulleys.....
They are both electrically and hydraulicly acuated. Basically the Oil Control Valve (electrical) is given the command to increase oil flow or decrease flow to the VVT. The oil then either advances the timing or the lack of oil causes the VVT to slow down and retard timing. Not going back to zero could mean the OCV isn't controlling the VVT properly or that the ECU isn't getting the right information from the Cam Angle Sensors. Sooooo long story made longer. The culprit could be ECU, Flash, OCV, VVT, Cam Angle Sensor, Wiring harness from ECU to OCV or CAS, or a partially blocked oil passage that doesn't allow the oil to escape the VVT fast enough. There are so many variables involved you'd have to start at one point and change parts until the problem went away. That's the reason the problem has been so hard to solve. TL;DR There are many different things that could cause this issue. |

My apologies, I updated our turbo thread, but overlooked this one.
Once the very latest Ecutek ROM came our way and we redid the maps to use it, the issue with the cams went away, or at least appeared to. So to confirm, I drained out the 10w40 oil and put in 0w20 as per manufacturer specs. It still has shown no signs of the issue on the logs, so at least in our case we can say it's ecu-software based. That said - looking at the live logs, the cams react much quicker on the heavier oil than on the lighter. It also idles much more rock solid on the 10w40, once the 0w20 went back in, it gets a little bit of a dip/bounce once in a while. I'll run on the 0w20 and continue to log to see what the overall reaction is. |

I wonder what would happen to my stock GT86 if id put 10w40 oil in it, instead of the factory 0w20. Noticed you wrote that it idles more solid. Mine idles kinda harsh when it's cold.

I currently have Amsoil Signature 5W30 in my engine that is Vortech supercharged and I still get idle dips from time to time. Otherwise it feels the same as 0W20.
