Random Facts
If anyone is interested this is from a thread where people are arguing over whether or not powder coating is causing metal fatigue and thus causing wheel failure. Here is my response, just a random snippet if anyone was interested in powder coating.
"Let me touch on the myth that powder coating is what is causing wheel failure. 100% not true. I am a chemical engineer who works in the electrocoating and powder coating industries and I service plants that produce hundreds of thousands of rims that are powder coated and electrocoated to go on cars and other motorized vehicles. The temperatures used for a powder coat or electrocoat cure is FAR below the levels that would cause metal fatigue or anything else along those lines. Those rims are repeatedly dipped in abrasive chemical scrubs as well before being coated. Most of the wheel failure links people show are from people taking CHEAP daily driver wheels onto the track and beating up on them. There is no link here, let me speak from years of experience in the industry." |

I enjoyed my BRZ on city streets during winter, very fun sliding when no one's around. But I did not enjoy it on slippery/icy highways in traffic. Even with I&S tires the back was trying to step out multiple times. The TC worked and caught it, but it still made me quite tense.

So why did you bump a 2-year-old thread?
![]() I usually read objections to powdercoating proper forged (BBS) rims coming from the manufacturer when people ask them. Care to comment? I'm sure temps are controlled in an industrial process. I'm not so sure if temps stay below critical for various alloys in some home-brew powdercoating rig. |

I came across the thread searching for something else lol. Did not look at the timeline of it. Home grown powdercoating is a completly different story. Professionals are using the correct oven temperatures and so are industrial manufacturers but the homegrown guys, that could be a different story. I wouldn't get any powder coating done by anyone who isn't a professional. That being said I am doubting these home grown guys are pushing the temperatures high enough to impact metal integrity, keep in mind I am not a metalurgist. Typically the range for oven temperature I have seen go from 300 F to 490F for the curing process and at these temperatures I don't think we are in any danger of the wheel having metal fatigue or compromising the structure of the metal. 99% of the stories I see online are cheap ass DD rims that people took to the track on a hot day and beat on and then they shattered and they can't figure out why. Keep in mind when they are driving them on the track we have not only heat, but applied force as well. So to make a long post shorter at the end here. The over temperatures in my opinion are not hot enough to get the metal to a sufficient temperature to change the structure of it. The only way to decrease the metal strength and integrity by temperature alone is to heat the metal to the point where the molecular structure is being re-arranged. I guess if some home grown guys are sitting these in a fire to get red hot it is possible. As for companies objecting to people powder coating wheels, this is super simple. Liability. When you go out and destroy your wheel and you come back to them, they can say well we told you to not powder coat it. The powder coating not having any impact on the performace, but any change from the manufacturer's original design will surely void any warranty you may have. No company wants to admit their wheels may have failed under heavy track use, they would much rather blame another variable that has no impact. Hard pressed to find any company to admit their product can fail or might be inferior in some way. |

If you do work for OEMs who deal with wheels you must have some metallurgist colleague. If you don't mind asking - I'd love to hear it from a pro. P.S. posted some links that I have in that thread on powdercoating. Last edited by dsgerbc; 04-18-2013 at 11:44 AM. |

I can't decide on my first mod. Front tow hook, mud flaps or save for a carsmo spoiler. Any opinions?
