parking in the city

Hello from Boston!

I want to head down to NYC for a weekend, girlfriend lives in the Financial district. In the past I've always just taken a bus or train, but I figure with the weather improving, it'd be nice to drive down.

The glaring problem in my eyes is that parking in NYC is a huge pain... does anyone have any suggestions for this? Something that won't break the bank...but safe.

Thanks in advance!

Back at ya from NY!

Those two terms are mutually exclusive when it comes to city parking Not to mention driving in the city is a giant pain in the ass. It may be worth it to consider driving to a secure parking structure outside of the city and then taking public transit from there if you're definitely interested in driving.

Did you want to drive just for the trip or were you planning on driving around in NYC while you're here? Downtown parking garages are around $40-$50 a day.

Put it in a lot or don't bring it IMO, unless you don't mind the bumper scratches you are going to get.

Yea, you could follow the metro north line in Westchester and park in the neighbor hood near a stop. My area is pretty safe with plenty free street parking if you want to do that its like 40 minutes train to time square.

I park my car in Manhattan almost every day... Always ALWAYS use the valet parking garages... It costs money, but I rather pay then to come back to a car with scratches or new "aerodynamic" dimples...

I park in a garage on Park Avenue, costs my @$$ about $250 a day to park there all day... but they hand wash lol

@Kochinopride holy crap... 250 per day? hahaha i think that's a little much for me. 250 even on weekends? that's like a monthly rate at some of the garages up here in boston.
@Foobar 40-50 isn't bad, by any chance, got names? lol I'll call em up and ask how much it'd be if i drove in on friday evening and left sunday afternoon.

my co worker goes to NY a lot to visit his parents, but they're out of the city so plenty of space to park haha, i miss the suburbs sometimes.

Check out Icon Parking Systems. They have a ton of garages in their network throughout the city. You might find coupons online.

i avoid driving into manhattan at all costs lol if you manage to even get to your destination without getting into an accident with a taxi or having a drunk homeless person fall into your car, consider yourself lucky lol and yea the parking is retarded. parking on the street is damn near impossible and the garages are usually like $15-20 per half hour or something ridiculous like that. bus or train FTW. my girlfriend always insists on driving in and i think she's nuts. i'd rather just hop on the train and ultimately pay the same as i would in gas/tolls and not have to worry about it. when i used to have my corolla i drove in to pick my ex up from somewhere up town and i parked on the street and got out to find her and turned around and watched a taxi come up behind my car and rear end it and drive away like nothing happened

I have parked my car on the street in Manhattan several times with no problems. Queens, however, is a different story.

I live right in the middle of Manhattan and drive my BRZ daily, don't pay attention to all the horror stories. How long are you planning on staying? There are a lot of garages that are pretty reasonable if you look hard enough ($20-$30 for a 24 hour period).

Check out http://www.primospot.com/, find ones close to you and call around. If you're staying for the weekend, shouldn't be too bad.

He's planning on staying in the financial district, so it's going to be more in the neighborhood of $30-40 for the usual parking garages. At least that's been my experience. I work downtown and drive in on occasion, but definitely prefer to use public transit instead.
