I agree with you that it is a serious risk. No one wants to crash their car out there. The safety reps will ensure everyone knows that you are not racing. This is a just for fun event and keep your distance and maintain control there is no point in.going all out it's not like you get a prize. AutoX is a little different you go all out because you are in a competition. You just have to have the right mindset and pay attention to everything while your out there and you should be just fine.

It's going to be an awesome movie. Probably will stray from what actually happened, but I won't care as long as it's a good story.

Much faster, much harder, lots of shifting, lot of sliding, and much longer, equals one kick-ass ride!!! But it is WAY more expensive as well. I will definitely start with Autocross for me just because I feel its more novice and honestly probably a better start to go that route. But I will definitely be building to the track circuit. It was a freakin BLAST! And yes Mook I will post in your thread once I am done with this.
You really shouldn't track a car unless you are mentally (and financially) prepared to wad up the car in a tire barrier. I speak from experience as I blew the motor on my last car on Firebird Main. Have you ever had your brakes fail on you? I have twice, both on the street and at an autocross. Both times I had enough margin to save the car. On the track, there is zero margin - particularly in a complex such as turns 2-3 on Firebird (Bondurant?) West. I've seen professional drivers eat it there...

That's to say nothing of equipment failures or bad decisions of the drivers around you. There's a reason DE2 scares me more than DE3.

That said I'll track the FR-S once or twice if I get around to buying good street tires for it and good pads. The car needs a lot of other, higher priority things to prepare for nats in September.

Go talk to Robert Rose on his opinion of autocross, he was the DE3 leader last time I ran with NASA. Robert understands the value that autocross can add to you as a driver, any other road course naysayers are full of it.

Agreed with all of your points. Again I have no intention to just jump on a track. I already said that if I were to start anywhere it would be autocross. Even at that level its still scary to drive a daily driver. Anything can happen. I was just posting the difference from both as a PASSENGER. It was an awesome experience to go through both with autocross and track. I would absolutely ride with Mook again if I get the chance. The Autocross was a blast too. (Ninjin, I still have to get a ride from you, its been awhile)

Sometimes you just have to take risks. A very good example, a street bike. I actually just had this conversation at work today. My coworker won't ride because he is too afraid of what other people will do. I am the opposite, I love riding and I won't let someone on the street ruin my fun. You just have to pay attention and be smart. Thats all you can do, you can't control the world. Lots of times bike riders will go down and never get up again and that is really unfortunate. I hope that never ever happens to me or anyone. I could just sell the bike and get something else (maybe more mods for my car ) but I will never do that because I love to ride and I feel its a great time. Its a risk, just like taking your car to the track or autocross for that matter. Same concept. Another risk. I hate to be cliche but you only live once.

Me personally, it's my daily driver and I can't afford another car at this point so I won't be taking my car to the track, if I do anything it will be autocross and I am not sure if it will be on a crazy competitive scale just for fun.

At least for now

Ask me in another year...

Very good stuff, I neglected to point out the mental side of being prepared to write off your car. If you are afraid, that fear can also lead to mistakes.

I am really enjoying this discussion on autox vs. road. I discovered both at Bondurant. I took the three day HPDE program, and it was well worth the money. I got to understand allure of oval, autox, and track. I really like the road course, and the implicit danger is thrilling, but the potential costs are daunting - wear and tear on equipment and replacing stuff frequently; the possibility of stuffin' it and hurting my car, or me, or both; and the financial outlay.

Autox, not so much, not to say there is not insane amounts of money spent at the top levels - Cosworth engines, Penske shocks, racing tires shot after one event.

Renfield 90 alluded to the what autox teaches: handling skills at the extremes and how to turn, both which are needed for real road racing. The first, driving at the extremes is hazardous at the track because it really creates the chance of going over the line, whereas, in autox, if you don't drive at the limit, the whole time, and still within control, you will lose.

Btw, you want road course terror, ride the damned van on the road course with a Bondurant instructor. The van is unstable, it handles like crap, it is beat up, and if it blow a rear tire, it will roll, but that lunatic drives it at break neck speeds on the course with one hand on the wheel as he points out key features with his other hand.

In autox, as in track, the best modification, beside decent tires, is seat time and instruction.

Ah, this applies to both autox and track, anything for that matter.
