Chirping

Hi all,

Im new here to this forum and figured Ill add a little to this thread.

I actually purchased my FRS about 3 weeks ago. Since I have purchased the car, I have noticed the "chirping" noise which is only apparent when the car reaches NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE ( I would pull it over at a gas station / parking spot and open the engine bay to hear this noise - which is not audible in the cabin ).

After reading the forums, I have filled the tank with SHELL 91 - which TOTALLY CANCELLED ANY CHIRPING

Having that said... our vehicles require a minimum 93octane, BUT we can use 91octane with NO DETRIMENTAL DAMAGE to the engine (according to the FRS manual from the dealership)

I thought this sound may have been caused as a "break in" kind of sound. So now that I am at 1000kms on the odometer, I depleted all the 91Vpower and filled up with PETRO 94 again to hear if the sound comes back.

Again with PETRO, the chirping sound is back!!!!!

According to some threads that I have read regarding the RECALL (from SUBARU) - it says that: even with the "chirping" sounds heard, it will not cause any detrimental damage to the engine/vehicle

***IMO, "chirping" sounds are not NORMAL and I would like the dealership to resolve the issue

Just curious, what brand and octane of gas are you using? Is it non-ethanol or 10% ethanol?

It's been said that the ethanol and the type of fuel has a lot to do with the chirping; forcing the plunger in the High Pressure Fuel Pump to squeak and chirp like crickets gone wild without the proper lubrication.

I've only used Chevron 94 Octane (No Ethanol) for mine since day 1.

Always non ethanol. There's a Chevron near my place (so 94 there) and the other source is Shell 91 (no ethanol)

Try Chevron only; I've heard Shell doesn't really help with the chirping...

Has anyone other than Future been able to get CDN dealer to do this fix? My chirps are audible with window down at idle (hasn't bothered me since temperature dropped so don't hear it too much since I always have the radio on)

Brought it into dealership, they found the TSB but told me the tech didn't think it was loud enough or something. So they said come back when you have more time so they can follow procedures exactly including a 10 min driving test (why do I want someone driving my car for 10 mins when I just drove it there and its warmed up...)

Curious if any GTA dealerships are processing these/have more experience?

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to check in with you all and see if anyone has had a positive experience getting a fix for the chirping from Toyota here in Canada.

I am actually sitting in the waiting area of the DVN Toyota/Scion for my 8000km oil change. I opened a case regarding the chirping at my last oil change (?3000km) and they had not gotten back to me since.

I printed out the Scion USA TSB for the chirping that is found at the sticky of the top of the TSB forum/thread, and the assistant service manager checked and found no TSB for the chirping here from Scion Canada. Furthermore he went on to say that the Canadian Scion Fr-S could be made different from the US Scion FR-S. Besides little things like mudguards, I don't think there are any other differences, and certainly no MECHANICAL differences.

I actually mentioned that the TSB is regarding the fuel injector and that it is very unlikely Canada gets a DIFFERENT fuel injector, but he said you never know...

Anyways, I am not really impressed by all this. They want me to book an appointment with the mechanic there to have it checked out AGAIN - even though I had it checked out several months ago when i opened the case.

Anyways enough my ranting. If anyone can post any positive experiences with getting the US SCION TSB done here in Canada that would be great.

So we are all speaking of the higher rated high octane number fuels, what are results with standard baseline gasoline?

Got chirping after 2000km. Always used Shell 91. Went to the dealership and they showed me the service bulletin issues by Toyota/Scion Canada. Stated you need to replace the fuel pump. Replaced my fuel pump. Chirping slowing starting to come back.....Ordered exhaust and intake to mask the sound LOL

I am taking your word for it! ahaha

Started to get Chirping within past month. Fill gas with Shell 91. No Ethenol.

Went to dealer yesterday, and chirping went away. Go figure. Lucky i took a video earlier in the week. It's the Fuel Injection that's causing the chirp.

Under Warrenty, so geting it replaced as we speak.

My chirping started yesterday, only three days after I took it out of storage. Had the car since July 2012, only ever filled up with Shell 91 ethanol free, I now have 5300km.

Guess even using Shell is not going to keep you safe. It's possible I got some bad gas this fill up - this stinks.
