The FR-S is a different bag, altogether. I think the styling of the car is pretty nice, but don't know how well it will age, whereas the VW is timeless, as are most German cars. The interior of the FR-S is plain, but I like that, not too many bells and whistles, just a good place to spend time, and enjoy what the car is really about. And, that is the fun of driving a well-balanced rear wheel drive sports car, with little weight to push around, and sharp reflexes. I don't look forward to long trips on the Interstate, slogging along at 75mph, it gets a bit boring, and honestly, the steering is a bit too quick and darty to enjoy. That's why I always try to find the "blue highways", curvier the better. For the price, this car is unbeatable, but at some point, I'll probably move on. There are just too many great cars, and too little time left for me. You won't be disappointed.

I would suggest you driving one before making the decision. For me, there is no comparison. But as Don Ivery suggests, they definitely drive differently so you may like it -- or not. I'm very active over on VWV (different username) as well and don't encounter any issues... I would suggest it's all about how you interact on the forum -- you control how you are treated. That being said, comments like "Don't reply to this thread anymore, you sir are fucking useless." are not going to help your case. Here or on any other forum. I'm active on a number of car and motorcycle forums and have learned that if you don't like the comment, leave it be and move on. Flaming the fire gets you nowhere real quick. Again, just friendly advice from a very experienced forum participant. Last edited by TheFunkyMonkey; 04-09-2013 at 01:04 PM. |

I have an automatic and you can easily get 34 mpg highway and about 23-24 mpg around town. Handling is amazing. It is definitely a 2 seater but folding the back seats down gives you quite a bit of storage. As other posters have said the interior quality is not up to VW's but it is not bad. A test drive should give you all what you need to decide. The VW Golf TDI was on my short list, but the electrical horror stories turned me away.

I too am afraid of the out of warranty stuff but my fiance drives like a maniac (90mph on the highway is a regular) and likes the 35mpg she still ends up with at the end. So that's why she's adamant we keep the diesel in the family.

Last off-topic comment -- promise... I'm out of warranty on a '10 JSW TDI and am dealing with VW and their electric gremlins. They want $475 to replace the electric lock on the drivers side rear door. It doesn't lock -- you can open it when the car is locked. The drivers door lock has already been replaced under warranty so I'm fighting them saying there is an issue with the locks which they are denying. And this is coming from a VAG fan boy -- I've owned over 10 VWs & Audis. Some have been really good and some have been really bad. I'm getting tired of the crap at this point in my life. And never mind the HPFP concerns... Good luck with your TDI and whatever you decide with regard to a FRS/BRZ.

Youre asking for too much info. Go to each of the subforums.
Essentially, youll consistantly get idiots saying "Toyota didnt X because racecar." The overall quality of the car is on par with every toyota in this price range.

My wife is in a mk6 TDI Sportwagen, photo evidence below. I frequently drive both cars in the same day, sometimes hopping from one running car to the other. I had some concern about muscle memory confusion because both are stick shift with completely different engines, but it was no problem.
Driving anything other than the FR-S now feels like driving a bus. On average we get the advertised mileage on both cars, sometimes better, sometimes worse, depending on obvious things. My only complaint about the FR-S is the window seals when wet and below freezing. My wife thinks the FR-S is more comfortable to ride in, on account of the comfy seats, and that is with stock suspension on both. I'm not sure what else to say. Goodbye to vagcom, hello to relays? |

I put 96k miles on it and wanted a change, it was a great car though, the only things that broke were a window switch, a door latch, and an exhaust pressure sensor.

To the OP, if you want to stay engaged, do what the fiancé wants. If you want more fun, just test drive one. You won't want to stay in your Golf any longer, no matter the MPG's. |

I lost 4 mpg by slapping heavy 18s on the TDI and made the ride alot harsher as well so ill likely get some 16s for her when the time comes just to make it back to what it really should be. Ill likely leave the FR-S very stock for the most part in fear of ruining it driving comfort for looks and handling like I have with my TDI. Thanks for the replies guys Ill have to start using the search button now I guess
