Obviously not knowing what was actually happening as I was not there, I'll just put in one of my experiences from when I had my AW11.
It had been raining for a week but the road was relatively dry, and I was sitting at a t intersection turning right. No traffic so I started off. I was not being stupid, I barely accelerated at all, and as I hit the 90degree turn at 10-15kph the car just slid out and spun nearly 360 degrees. I sat there for a second dumbfounded as to how it could possibly have happened and then left. What I'm saying is that it does not take much to get loose, even at parking speeds. And there are many variables that we may not be aware of...he may not even have been aware of them. And even if he removed his TC/SC by holding for 4secs or even the peddle dance, what makes that irresponsible? Only he knows his abilities and the exact conditions. I always drive with my nannies off unless it is icy roads where I have sport on. The reasoning behind that for me and because if I screw up and have accidentally pulled in front of someone, it can sometimes be safer to accelerate out of the way rather than to stop in front of an oncoming vehicle. The last thing I need is the rear tyres to be in a low traction situation, try and accelerate and have the traction control control my acceleration. I like to be in control of my own car thank you. |

So sorry about your car. I had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. Driving and not trying to push it or do anything stupid, but didn't realize how slick country vs city roads that I'm used to can get in the rain. Luckily didn't flip like yours, but totaled by insurance none-the-less, so I feel your pain.

Hate to bump an old thread, but thought you guys may want an update.
There is still an investigation pending and I have received a court summons from the police. Have added a few more pics for your viewing pleasure. Yes, TC was off, I actually said it from day one to the police and insurance whenever questioned. Like I said I wasn't out hooning at that time and I was confident I was under the speed limit so I took the honesty approach and told them EVERYTHING. Today though I got my EDR (Event Data Recorder) data though and a short report from the technician. (This was requested by me) Here is what I have worked out so far: I wasn't speeding. Yay!! The EDR only records in 0.5 sec intervals (at least the speed, accelerator, RPM etc), the air bag sensors do have reports in milliseconds, but they only cover a second or so of data and are pretty much useless (unless you want to figure out how fast you were spinning around). I actually exited the corner just fine (even the EDR shows this to some extent), no under steer or over steer as far as I can remember. It's actually on the straight section of road after the corner, when I loose control. PS, I could be misinterpreting the above EDR information which is why I am saving the really exciting data for another post. The plan is to speak to a Toyota Tech about the readout and get a better understanding before any conclusions are drawn. Overall there are about 4 things that don't make sense looking at the report and I will go and investigate these further. Here is something to think about, have a look at the photos: Final reading from ECU at T=0 has the steering at 230 degrees to the left (from EDR report). This matches the drivers side tyre, but if you look at the passenger side tyre and the actual steering wheel, you get an angle of let's say around 45 degrees to the right. Interesting no? Zooming in on the FT86 sticker, on the rear quarter panel, I noticed the phrase "fistful of fun"... Good to know its not only fun but also safe as the crash test claim. Glad you are all okay.

Glad you and the gf are ok, and glad that you're doing your due diligence with the car. I could go with the "always drive with the nannies on" rant, but I think you got the message.
Not to vulture, but I know a bunch of people in the US market that would pay quite a bit for those headlights, steering wheel, truck liner, HVAC, Stereo, etc. Do the laws in NZ work the same way as here? We can't part out totaled cars, but can you? |

According to the insurance company, the wreck will go off for tender when I sign it off and when all the data has been collected.
I can try keep in touch with whoever buys it and see what happens. Either way, I wouldn't get your hopes up for the headlights. They are right hand drive. |

I know what caused your accident, your steering wheel was installed on the wrong side of the vehicle! Either that or the multiple rolls pushed it over there.

1) Driver excess: too fast, too sloppy, poor reactions, removal of safety devices or a combination thereof. 2) Road or weather issues: loss of adhesion due to oil, wet leaves, animal... etc. Sudden changes of weather (tornado, microburst...). Road changes due to fissure, earthquake, bad camber, landslide. 3) Driver inattention: dozing, distraction, involved with passenger..... 4) Vehicle failure: stuck throttle, tire failure, failure in driveline....... Any of these, alone or together, could have caused the accident.... Interestingly in almost all accident investigations it is found that there is more than one cause (e.g. the distracted driver braked too late on wet leaves). |
