Best lug nut? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hi FT86ers

Money aside, what would be the best lug nuts?

Meaning it will be strong, reasonably light, secure and will not fade or chip when removing wheels a few times a year. I will be using these for the summer with my TE37SLs.

I have personal experience with muteki SR48 and Ray's Dura Nuts and I will not be going back to those as the muteki chipped after 1 track season and the RAYS basically faded to nothing.

A few choices I have on my mind are:

Any recommendations or pointers?

All finishes will fade or chip over time. This is simply nature trying to do its natural thing.

If you track, you can't expect your lug nuts to look perfect. We have our own lug nuts that utilizes Type III anodized, which is the thickest specified anodized layer you can get. It's also made from forged Aluminum 7075-T6 so it's extremely light and strong. Obviously, aluminum has its limitations if you force it to do what it's not engineered/designed to do.

it's best if I can get blue ones since my car is blue or a color that will match my pressed graphite rims

^McGard. Steel. Spline. Locks. 60 degree cone taper. What else you need?

Sorry to go off on bit of a tangent, but is it true that the lug nuts that came on the car can't be used for aftermarket wheels?

There are lots of great choices out there.
The ones you listed are more on the high dollar tier nonetheless great lug nuts.
There are pros and cons of lug nuts.

We typically use the Muteki SR48's - affordable, available in various colors, and extremely durable.
They are made out of 50BV30 steel, which is heavier then aluminum but can take a beating for years to come, and threads will hold up.

Kics R40 is another great choice for lug nuts, which is also steel construction.

I've got Gorilla lugs on my car, they seem to be pretty good. Not too expensive, steel and I think you can get them in different colors. They look very much like many others, so maybe one company make multiple brands?

Don't waste your time on the Gorilla Small Diameter Aluminum lug nuts. I just installed my SSR's today and they color is already chipping after 1 installation.

Tut's correct. Stock Subaru lugs are 60* cone taper...but have a much smaller lug seat.

My McGards were zipped down with an impact and tightened with a torque wrench...all while going through the spline socket. They still look new.
