Will this little scratch buff out?
Gonna try buffing this out. Maybe a paint pen if that doesn't work.

lol...I was kidding. That's a bit beyond buffing out.
Hoping a rear deck spoiler will cover it. That's the plan anyway...

Any thoughts on how to prep this if I do go the "cover it with a spoiler" route? I'm thinking just clean it up to get rid of any residual steel from whatever it was that hit it (I can already see rust spots) then prime it and put a few coats of paint. My only concern would be water getting under the spoiler and sitting in the shallow dent caused by this. I say "shallow dent" even though it nearly went through the metal. I guess that's better than having it go through my face, which is where it almost ended up.
This was one of those "I can see it coming but can't really do much about it" moments. I did manage to goose the throttle a bit which is probably the only thing that kept it from coming through the windshield. Yee haw...If I can't find a spoiler that will cover it, I suppose it's time for a new aftermarket trunk lid.

I was going to ask how the hell that happened to your trunk on I-95... but its I-95... Killer of all things wheeled.
Buddy of mine drove an RX8 from the dealer onto I-95 where the truck in front of him dropped its drive-shaft. Bye-bye rx-8. I-95 is a death trap. use any sort of anti-corrosion sealent on it after you wash it so it doesnt start to rust from that spot. Then, i would put a layer of wax sealent on top to keep moisture off the metal.

The actual trunk lid shouldn't rust as it's aluminum. But whatever hit it was steel as it left some material behind that is starting to rust. Probably wouldn't hurt to put some kind of sealer on after a few top coats though.

Trunk lid is not aluminum - it will rust. Only the hood is aluminum IIRC.

I would have a pdr man remove the small dent, build it up with touch-up paint and then buff it out. If you did it close to right, in the end only you would know it's there.

That's good to know. I thought both the hood and trunk were aluminum with the roof being steel...that sucks. May just go with a new trunk lid.

I'll have to check into that. It almost went through the metal so I'm not sure if it's in good enough shape to go with a paintless dent repair...thanks for the suggestion though...worth looking into...

Sounds like a reason to replace the whole thing.... Carbon fiber, anyone?
