I don't want to go to a shop that will simply use VHT and clear it on top, because I believe it can still crack.

I have a GTI that I vht black night shaded and cleared in 07. They are still perferct. Also if you want ill use a House of Kolor candy red and 2 part clear if you want

I would love to have you do it. But it's my daily and I don't want to get pulled over for missing tail/brake lights. I'm pretty good at painting so I wanted to know what paint to use if I was doing it myself, or what to look out for and ask if I take them to a shop.

Vht red tint is your savior. Wetsand your tails with water and 1500 grit. Do not sand in circular motions. Clean with blue paper shop paper towels and prep solvent or atleast rubbingalcohol. Shake can vigorously. Spray in side to side motions using a decent speed so not to run the tint because. It is very thin. Wait ten minutes bewteen coats. Try to do one very light coats, two more even coats. When desired color is achieved let dry for about 2 hours before handling. Touch and area that has overspray on to test if they are dry or not. Then take take to a body shop within in the. Next few days the sooner the better. Ask they spray a light light coat of adhesion promoter and clear for you. Do not clear on your own using any kind of clear out of a can. And boom. Watch some YouTube vids on spray painting

I take that back you can clear out of a can. This is a real automotive body shop clear in a can it has a plunger on the bottom of the can. When depressed it releases the hardner in the clear turning it in to a 2 part clear after shaking. Caution do not spray this in your house. Only in s ventilated area with and appropriate dust mask. Which are approximately 30$ each. After using this product is wait up to 12 hours before handling. See your local laws about spraying this product. I have used this product in exterior doors and numbers and a roof. Have bought several cans it is simple and a top notch results product. If you can spray paint you can use this clear no problem. I should make a DIY

Any particular reason why it looks dark and somewhat cloudy?

That was just lighting in some of the pics..you can compare from pic to pic to see that it's lighter and darker in different lights. As far as cloudiness, I'm not sure what you are seeing.
