I personally like the second rack just because it allows for mounting more than just the bike. You could put anything you want on those racks. I know you only want it for your bike but say you had some extra cargo roof racks to mount too would be pretty convenient.

That and there is something about the tow hook design that doesn't quite sit right in my mind. I cant decided what it is exactly, its nifty and creative, but something is just a little off...

Personally; take the wheels off, fold down the seats and you can get two (road) bikes crammed in there. If I need more space I use my truck.

Might be worth examining how much you really NEED a rack.

the rear mount looks like it could seriously block the rearview

It'll take some work and it won't look pretty but it's possible. You also won't get much else in and in hindsight it may depend on the bike... (My roommate had a 60cm bike, I don't think I could get two of those in...)

You can always try it out first
One bike is easy if you're willing to spend 5-10 minutes getting it apart and situated.

My take on the first rack is it looks like it would be less prone to bumps, scrapes, or scratches to the car. The second rack looks less awkward and not block you're rear view when driving, like @norsamerican mentioned.

Before I'd get a bike rack I'd try to fit the bike in the car first.

All I do is take the front wheel off my road bike, and it fits perfectly inside the trunk. I was thinking about a roof rack myself, but I doubt I'll buy one.

Here's an existing thread on the Yakima roof rack solution

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15028

I'm curious about how close the cross bars are placed (I usually try to place them as close as possible to fork and rear wheel), but I'm sure they thought all that through.

Sea sucker is the rack I am going to be using for my Rocky Mountain MTB this summer. Easy and quick to install. With no pernament obstruction in your car.
