I hear this when I don't lift off the gas completely before pressing the clutch. I never suspected the pulley.

So far we think it is:

1.) Pulley
2.) Tranny (maybe differential)
3.) Sound tube (maybe because it's cold outside)

There was someone who got a new differential because they heard the same sound and after numerous test drives with a Subaru rep he was given a new diff.

My car makes a noise between shifts too. Would be interested if you found the culprit.

Yea I took my car in to have the fuel pump replaced and now mine does the same thing. I'm leaning more towards clutch/trans issue thatn any of the other. I have had issues with having the lsd engage when I shift into reverse and making a large clunking noise, but it seems to not occur anymore.

I noticed the same noise on my BRZ yesterday. When depressing the clutch, there is a "honk" and I can feel a vibration in the clutch pedal. I suspect it's coming from the clutch master cylinder. I'll try and see if I can pinpoint the noise if I get slow this week.

I have the exact same thing happening.

I have the Perrin Pulley and full Perrin Intake (CAI + Inlet Tube).

So, i think we can rule out that is has anything to do with the stock intake.

If i had to venture a guess, I think it's in the clutch assembly, since it ONLY happens during shifting, and not at any other time.

I assume that it's got something to do with the engage/disengage and maybe the clutch just needs to be broken in a little. It doesn't seem to effect anything mechanically, and also doesn't seem to have any effect on the holding of the clutch.

I got this for a whole week once, when sitting at a stop light & slowly pressing in the clutch to shift into first; if I press the pedal in faster it doesn't make the noise/ pedal vibration. I personally believe the under pedal parts/ clutch return spring just needs to be lubed up or WD40'd; although I only experienced this for about a week when the weather was humid here in Las Vegas; it has completely disappeared now even when I just press the pedal in slowly.

Cliff - check under dash for squeaking while slowly depressing clutch pedal; if found, lube/ grease/ WD40 or wait for humidity in your local climate to disappear

As far as climate goes - Here in Fargo, ND i've owned the car for about 3 weeks. I have close to 500mi on it. The temps have alternated between 20F and 40F and not really moved out of those temps.

It's also been both very dry and humid over the last few weeks, with neither one seeming to make a difference.

I have a Perrin lightweight pulley and no honking between shifts, so I don't think that's the culprit.

try tightening the locknut underneath the clutch pedal. this is a common problem on the toyota x-runners. the locknut would come lose causing the pedal to squeak/honk all the time.

I really don't think it's coming from the interior. I'm like 95% sure it's something to do with the clutch.
