Had a kartboy SS on my 06 STI... kartboy is pretty much the standard SS in the Subaru world. Check NASIOC, I bet 90% of the build threads have kartboy SS or other kartboy parts listed on them.

Anybody actually make a shifter that is taller than stock by about 2-3" with slightly longer throw length as stock but at a better height closer to the wheel? That would be the only 'short throw' shifter I'd consider over stock. As it is now I have a ball shift knob that sits about 3/4" higher than stock height. I loved the Hurst Competition + shifter on my track Camaro, put the shifter right where it needed to be...
![]() Something like the Hurst Competition + unit for the 86 would be what I'd want. Would just need to figure out an elegance reverse lockout collar mechanism so it won't make the whole unit look out of place/too bulky...

kartboy makes the best. and you may ask why...
well, like tom said, they have been around subaru's since 99 and they aren't just out to mass produce millions of SS for cars (b&m, twm). those are also good brands. but when you want something from a company that loves and knows your vehicle just as well (die hard fan), i would choose them. i have used kartboy ss since my first wrx. and from then on, i would only buy them. they correct what's sloppy and address bushing issues and their prices are good!
