What a shame. If it was £22K I would have had one. £28K would make me consider alternative options like second hand M3's, Porsche's and others....

Disappointing really.
Totally agree, but its not official yet so theres still hope. But once your hovering around 30k its a whole new level.

Let's hope Autocar have got the price quote wrong. I have been following the development of this car for a long time and it would be a shame to have to look at alternatives. After all we are still talking about a four pot Toyota!

Comparison's to second hand Cayman's, M3's, 911's and other such 6 and 8 cylinder cars may wipe the smiles of Toyota exec's if they don't shift the numbers they expect.

So we have one source for the price. Best to wait for an official RRP rather than cry about a price that we don't even know is correct.

I have a feeling we will be looking at £28K for a modest spec. I cannot think that Autocar would get their price quotes that wrong.

I hope I am wrong but if I am right, despite being a huge fan of the concept, I won't be buying one.

Quite amazing on the forums how price is such an issue
11 years ago my Subaru Impreza was nearly 23k
I wish I had got the P1 but that was 32k but I was poorer then

Such an outcry when the WR1 came out at 32k and the Rb5 320 at 35k
And the cosworth at £50 k people were suicidal and wanting to shoot Subaru MD

I did not really believe it would be 22k as a STi is 34k
( all english pounds not dollars ) and though aprox 30k
You can't compare new cars with second hand sports cars like Porsche as you can get a Boxster for under 8k now and all the problems associated with that and the Peugeot RCz is 25-30k
Sciroccos and -Audi tt are similar money

Just remember a top of the range ford focus ,YES ford focus is 23k

If its what you like and love
Is the pound notes a problem

No point in being the richest man in the grave yard

Audi and BMW offer higher perceived quality, more pedigree, more horsepower for the same money that has been quoted so far for the GT-86.

This will all mean nothing if it comes out nearer the £20K it was only recently reported for.

£8K extra is a serious amount of dosh.

And in my opinion the comparison against second hand Porsche's, M3's and possible Evora's is a consideration. After all, they are all on my shortlist although I would lean away from the Toyota if they are equally priced. I am in my mid 30's and would anticipate being the sort of customer Toyota are looking to attract, especially as I have until the FT-86 concept never considered a Toyota before.

Thats the nail in the coffin right there. They really need to address this for it to have any kind of success in large numbers in the UK.

I'm also from the UK and really looking forward to the car being launched. I am going to a preview/reader clinic thing with What Car tomorrow where I'll be able to get a good look at the car.

Yes that has been subarus failing in the uk in the last couple of years
The yen has made Subaru very expensive compared to Audi /vw/skoda /seat
The lack of a performance diesel that can give 40-50mpg as my wrxd is off the price lists now when it went over 25k
Rising fuel costs and insurance has killed the high performance market Scoobies and EVOS

Maybe the future for Subaru is trendy looking coupes ,but will the tradional Subaru buyer want a RWD modle ?

Hello guys and Lauren!,

Another brit here - nice to see a couple of familiar names.

I am looking forward to seeing how much of all this fun stuff we'll be getting on our shores. Prices will be what they are. No point figuring out if its worth it until the prices are published.

As for the comparisons to Porsche. I'm a previous owner of a 2.7 Cayman, and the current owner of 3.6 996 C2 (aswell as an AW11 SC) I can say that cost of ownership has the very strong potential to be very high for the Porsche. Per year, you could easily spend 2k on a Boxster/Cayman and more (lots!) besides for the 996. The relatively cheap price of a 5-7 year old Porsche does not take into account what may or may not happen to that car during your ownership of it. Don't take my word for it - the condition of allot of the older cars on PH (which aren't favoured - like the 986/987/996(not turbo, c4s or GT)) says everything. they are being bought by people who can't afford to look after them - and then sold on again in a worse state!

A car that won't cost you an arm and a leg down the line will just cost you an arm and a leg at the beginning!

On a more positive note....

Because of my history with AW11s (I've had a Mk.1b and am doing a lot of work on my SC) I am very keen on the GT86. I'm keen on the philosophy of the GT86 more than the car itself really so I am really looking forward to seeing the GT86. I'm pretty sure the 911 will be sold and my partners MCS will also be sold to fund a GT86 for me and a Mk.3 MR2 for her.

During its conceptual stage I looked at 3 things. 1.) Price, 2.) Style, and 3.) its Aspiration...

1.) 20k-ish, 2.) looks absolutely amazing, 3.) a drivers car that goes back to basics and none of that complex computer malarkey.

What came out is a car that's

1.) 28k, 2.) looks 'meh' (but then the same can be said of the AE86), 3.) from reviews it looks like the only thing that's spot on.

I just want to sit in this car now and hope that number 3 on the list does it so much justice that 1&2 will be irrelevant.
