Switch roof, hood, side panels to fiberglass (I know aluminum is light but fiberglass is lighter), switch battery to LiFePO, take out stereo, take out back seats, lighter wheels, should get in the 2400s?

I wouldn't consider a car street-worthy without sound deadening, the rest of those don't really affect typical usage (I don't listen to music, but keeping the stereo I imagine would only add like 20-30 pounds).

Not likely.. maybe to 2530#. SS single exhaust should get some good weight savings... as well as AC delete, ss headers, passenger seat delete. Can't think of anything else lol

BTW, likely no sound deadening either. I remember that coming up a while back.

I dont see how hearing outside noise and noises your car makes more clearly make the car not street worthy

I understand sound deadening for lux cars but for this were weight is a important factor more sound less sound doesnt mean nothing to me

sounded deadening removal doesn't reduce usability at all in my eyes but i can see why some may not want to go that far

You could switch to eDead or something to keep your sound deadening and still shave some weight from the fruitcake-looking stuff (do they still use this?), that's if the 86 has any substantial deadening to begin with.

A lot of the time it's not just sound it keeps out, but heat. It can also mask or muffle rattles. The last thing I want my street car to be is a hot-ass rattlebox. IMO, the minuscule weight savings aren't worth the driveability and enjoyment trade-offs. But that's me.

Sound deadening material is surprisingly heavy. I know some special Subaru models of the STI (the Type-RA I believe) had no or little sound deadening material in order to save weight.

I was going to do it on my Impreza whenever I got around to changing the carpet, but now that its got a salvage title I don't think I'll ever bother with it.

I'm just wondering if we'll really be able to shave as much as we think off of that 2610lbs in the FR-S. I mean, they've already left out a lot of crap that we never would've deleted in the first place (metal wheel arches to name one). I'm betting the rear seats weigh about ten pounds total as well.

If you're really aggressive with the removal of stuff, swap your driver's seat out for a carbon racing seat and delete all of the carpeting/sound deadening/dash/passenger seat/door cards/spare/lexan where you can put it, etc...I'm thinking 2430 would be about right.

This kind of brings me back to Opera's S2000 though, which SCC did an article on many moons ago that was reprinted in Modified in '09. Good to know it was kept around on the internet!

Stock structural members have been analyzed for their efficiency and Swiss-cheesed if they are anything less than first-rate at doing their job. In their place are literally hundreds of custom pieces, circle-drilled and chamfered to reduce weight while retaining substantial rigidity, then MIG-welded to the stock sheetmetal.

...

1-second lap time around Tsukuba Circuit doesn't necessarily involve tens of thousands of dollars in bolt-on performance parts. As long as you've found a way to hack weight down from 2976 pounds to an astounding 2167 pounds, that is.
But really, none of us are going to go that far.

It surprised me that the car still had the dash, carpet and door cards... impressive work.

Y'all might be surprised how little sound it takes to permenantly damage your hearing, or even just subdue it for a period of time, while your ear heals.

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if taking out the sound deadening put road/wind noise at dangerous levels-especially if you're on poor roads or noisy tires.

For reference, going highway speeds with the windows down is enough to subdue your hearing for a bit.

I'm curious now, do convertibles not exist in your universe?

I have a Miata NB. I HATE IT! Well the sound of the tire noise on shitty Texas highways, anyway. You practically have to yell to talk to the person next to you. #1 reason I want a hard top car.

The car is rated 2680 or so on official releases I saw. I'm sure they won't add any extra airbags on U.S. models, Front and Seat airbags are all I expect. Maybe A-piller/Roof-line airbag. I don't expect knee airbags.

I think the car has steel drive shaft. Toyota would not make a two piece CF shaft and they will put CF in the promo material if they used any at all.

I say go for Aluminum shaft, lighter battery, lighter exhaust muffler and main pipes, lighter wheels, and lighter front seats without airbags. Rear seat will probably lighter than 240SX seats. I pulled those out before and all it had was a thin stamped steel plate with holes. Without going overboard this car might hit 2600lb. More could be saved by using aluminum suspension arms. But I'm not sure if aftermarket ppl will focus on those.

If I was worried about my hearing I wouldn't be attending Deamau5 and Nine Inch Nails concerts
