Is that the consensus about the gauge? My previous cars all had pretty accurate gauges and could be relied upon. If the gauges on the twins are not accurate I guess I'll start to do the math on fill ups myself. The next tank I'll do the math and see if they jive at all. Thanks for the heads up.

idunno how you manual guys are getting 'low' mpg numbers. I have a very heavy foot, basically run to redline on freeway onramps, agressive downshift turns and lane changes, and I do a canyon run almost every weekend. yet i still get above 27mpg lol

pro tip, only use the gears you need aka, normal slow traffic is usually gear shift 1>2>5/6, maybe a 3rd gear shift if im feeling spirited. Ive met alot of new manual trans guys with the notion that they HavE to shift through every gear ... maybe in the early days before fully synchro'd gears.

as for the auto guys, it still boggles my mind that autos get better mpg haha, since I grew up knowing that autos always got worse mpg.

my 0.2c

My auto crusing at 75-80 sits right around ~2.6k RPM
My friends manual cruising 75-80 sits at ~3.4k RPM (if i remember correctly, correct me if im wrong as well MT guys)

Those were the days of "dumb" AT's. Today's cars have much more complex and "smart" computers controlling the trasmissions. In the past the 2 primary reasons MT's got better mpg's was 1. AT's had dumb computers controlling them and 2. most MT drivers disengaged their clutch allowing the motor to free rev and cause less parasitic loss therefore savings some gas. Throw in stop and go traffic and that resulted in noticable differences.

sounds about right for the 6th gear rpms in a M/T

well that explains the A/T higher mpg, you guys have a taller final gear

I hesitate to say it is the general concensus. I found that on 90-100% highway driving it reads within +/-0.5 mpg of the real consumption but my daily commute yeilds the largest deviation. The gauge will read 28-29 but my calculated average is 26 or so. Id say it has a 7%-10% error in fluctuating fuel consumption scenarios.

Yeah but i figured that'd be a bigger difference on freeways/highways more than city. Im usually stuck in traffic when i drive on the freeway.
