You do realize that Tada-san himself said he wants the GT-86 to become a "mini-brand" with different variants like what BMW did with Mini... right?

Well, he did and if things keep going his way then we get the GT86 convertible, then maybe a sedan, then maybe a wagon. Well, the USA most likely won't get the wagon due to CAFE standards but still you get the point.

Sure, and that's cool. There's no oddness in the Mini brand - they're all pretty much the same shape (Mini coupe notwithstanding) and they're all pretty clearly Minis. A wagon 86 would be a far larger departure from the concept than anything Mini's done... and it wouldn't sell in the US because nobody buys wagons here anymore. A shame, too, as they're far more interesting than CUVs or (puke) minivans.

Since this car is somewhat front biased one could theoretically presume that they could produce a hatch-ish version and limit the weight moved backwards from center to produce a then 50/50 dist.

Disagree!

This is how NOT to do a 5-door!

Mini has a clubman, countryman and SUV and roadster... Kind of the same, kind of big differences. I would imagine Tada-san "Variation on a theme" would be in a similar vein.

Mini-Crossover SUV:

Larger Mini countryman:

Roadster:

Mini Clubman:

I'm torn on the Countryman - in a way I think it's kinda lame, but then I get the "Mini Monster Truck" vibe from it, and I kinda like that too.

That said, I wouldn't mind if Mini axed it. It's the only four-door Mini and that in itself makes it "un-Mini".

I wonder how much of the 86 sedan's raison-d'etre could be preempted by making the Yaris a little sportier. Tighten up the suspension and give it a front LSD with a better power plant a la Focus ST.

Inspired by the GTS... inspired by the 2000GT... makes a 4 door and convertible version.

I remember seeing the old FT86 4 door renders but Toyota really follows up with it, they'll water this car down.

Make room for 4 adults, add the weight of 4 adults, now change the weight to 4 American adults...realize the engine pushes only 200hp and has a significant torque dip...realize car will be a dog as a sedan and 86 will gain a reputation that they all suck.

Now if we're adding a turbo or tweaking the car to gain at least 50hp and remove torque dip (oem, not talking add-ons) and these changes will be available on future coupes then sure I'm game.

Yeah... but that'll rune the Toyota (USA) motto "eco, cheap & AT"
