I thought my tires had a bit of life left

Until I saw this screw sticking out as I was putting them away. I was hoping for one more auto-x on this set, but it looks like I may have to put my next set on early.

Any thoughts? Can it be fixed, cheaply?

Pull it out, i don't think it went through all the way. Usually if screws make it into the tire they go all the way down to the head, it looks to me like it got stuck on top of the steel belt. I'm a tire tech and I repair 10+ tires a day, I see this all the time. On a side note though I personally would replace the tires because they look like they are worn too much.

while it is not on the sidewall and thus can be patched, your tyres appears to be worn down to the wear bars already. time to move on to a new set.

Agreed, sidewall puncture is bad, but in the tread face is fine, even though the carcass. Tread wear is the red flag here.

Thanks for the responses. I pulled out the screw after I finished swapping wheels. There wasn't any rush of escaping air, so I'm feeling optimistic. I'll check the pressure in the morning to make sure there isn't a slow leak.

I should clarify that these are auto-x only tires and not driven on the street. These are my first set of dedicated auto-x tires, but it's my understanding that they're usually used until the tread is totally gone, or they start to show cord on the shoulders.

And yes they are very close to that point, my driving hasn't been gentle

Most auto x or track tires are fastest when the tread is almost gone, so these still have lots of life left as long as they haven't been heat cycled too many times and lost grip from that.

Throw them back on, and throw a little smoke in front of your neighbors house. Preferably one you're not fond of. Those things are toast.

The tires have 154 runs on them so far. Star specs are usually expected to last longer than that, but I've been overdriving a lot. I'm going to run these on the 17th and maybe the Tucson event after that, depending on how they perform next weekend. I've heard mixed things about the Star Specs once they get down past the wear bars, but most people have been telling me to run them till they cord, and I don't really mind if I'm not getting "ultimate grip" as long as its not dramatically worse than before.
