Actually, I double dipped when signing the contract for the GT 86. I also leased an Auris Hybrid as company car the same day to do something for the environmental mind.

gt86 already has pretty good mileage; a hybrid is hardly necessary for this car..

If they can do some type of energy recovery based system like the Toyota Le Mans car as mentioned above, or better yet, an AWD system like the new Audi Le Mans cars, then that would be cool as long as it didn't add too much weight or cost too much. More power and/or traction with the same or better fuel economy.

I hate hybrids. They can't be made sporty at all - we only have to look at Toyota's to see that

Hybrids are ridiculously expensive compared to their non-hybrid counterparts, don't get all that amazing gas mileage (My old 91 CRX got over 50mpg and my 2008 Hyundai Accent got about 40mpg) They add a lot of weight to the cars with batteries and an extra motor. The batteries go bad and must be replaced, the minerals in the batteries are mined out of the earth and are hazardous to the environment. Oh, and they also burn fossil fuels on top of all that. Sounds like a gimmick to me. Electric motors are pretty sweet, but we don't have the technology to make them practical yet. Having all available torque at 0rpm would be pretty awesome, but I'm willing to wait a few years and skip this hybrid crap. |

The nickel metal hydride batteries in the prius are extremely reliable and long lasting. Many out last the cars they are originally put in. Many more last well past 200k miles. Any part on a car that could last that long would be considered tremendous! Toyota also has a recycling program in place for all of the batteries so they are disposed of properly and do not, DO NOT end up in land fills or junk yards. Toyota also purchased Panasonic's battery division and with no need to pay markup the batteries cost less than $2800. That's less than most transmission rebuilds our replacements and how long does a transmission last. Your CRZ may have gotten close to that but it's emissions I promise were much different than the current hybrid and vehicles in general really. Emission restrictions actually degrade efficiency, plus safety requirements make these modern cars way heavier than your CRZ. And your accent may have gotten 40 straight highway but no way you averaged 40. The prius average is 50! Yes hybrid burn fossil fuel bit at a much lesser rate. Toyota released a study that showed of everyone in the US drive a prius, the US would cut it's dependence on foreign oil by 70%! Wow what a gimmick! Last but certainly not least the prius has proven more reliable than 90% of vehicles made. And had been rated the most reliable by JD power and associates 5 years in a row. With 35% fewer problems than the average car. Plus this car has no alternator, distributor, starter motor or power steering pump. Fewer parts, fewer belts, less up keep and less problems. It's been around for ten years and Toyota has sold over 4 million hybrids world wide. This ain't no flash in the pan operation. As good as the FR-S is it will never sell 4 million units and it will never have the impact that Prius had had on the auto industry. Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

Sure, if you are going to call someone out you'd best explain your reasoning. :happy0180: I still stand by what I said. I can't wait for cars to become fully electric, but this hybrid nonsense isn't all that great. |

So I backed my statement with facts and real world numbers and applications and then you just rebut with your opinion. Great discussion man. Spouting how bad for the environment batteries are we should prolly just get rid of everything with a battery. I mean if they are so terrible and horribly detrimental to the environment we should ditch the batteries completely. Good bye cell phones, digital cameras and laptops. These devices contribute tons of more waste than a prius could.
Toyota spends more money on research than any other company in the world. They don't need to fabricate statistics. Toyota is also recognized as one of the "greenest" companies in the world. The plant in which the prius is built produces almost zero waste, half the power it uses comes from solar, and water is also recycled. The air coming out of a prius tailpipe is cleaner than the air going in. If you think that hybrid technology is expensive and a waste, just wait till you see what it will cost to produce, manufacture and retail a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle! Don't forget full electric vehicles that you plug into the wall are getting that electricity from somewhere. Most of the US is coal powered. In these states a full electric vehicle or even a vehicle like the volt, your carbon footprint is larger than if you drove a prius that burns gas and self generates electricity. Hence you would contribute to more greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere, and without burning an ounce of gas in your car. Weird huh? Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
