It is extremely close to this book honestly and it's shocking how little of the "common" public seems to realize it. The biggest problem I see with the Occupy movements is that no matter how much they picket, protest, and "occupy" multiple locations, the people who need to be educated - the American public - do not care. They may be directly affected by all the things you are shouting, or none, but they will not rally to your cause.

So, in my opinion, it's a waste of time.

I'm guessing you are too young to get the book as required reading

I'm 20, never had to read it. They have probably changed the curriculum since then. Maybe even censored it out?

Probably just decided it wasn't important and not needed for the wonderful standardized testing :P

A coworker just told me that her 4th grade son has to read The Hunger Games which some say is partially based on 1984 (in reality both of them are based on the same original story). I've never read The Hunger Games but she found it interesting and somewhat relevant to todays world so I might actually try to read it.

I guess the reason people are protesting is because they think their chances of going out and creating their own future are being "taken away" by greedy people. I won't argue whether they're justified in blaming other people for their troubles, but what are they even protesting? What do they want changed? There's no point in protesting if no one knows what exactly they want done differently.

That depends on which person you talk to in each Occupy group. With no central message or goals, everyone has a different answer to those questions.

And yes, that's what, IMO, gives them a 0% chance of success. I do believe that a lot of government reform is needed, but this isn't the way to do it IMO.

^ Yeah I agree this is probably not the best way to do it. But it is a start. I am sure during the civil rights movement people were stating "this isnt the best way to do it" but hey eventually something like this leads to bigger things. Its just a matter of time as long as theyre persistent and start to become organized then perhaps something will happen. But like I said before this has just really raised awareness of our countrys current situation.

That's not necessarily true. In pretty much all cases, the groups do form around a complete socialist remodeling of the American society. The "specifics" of how it is done, or what is given, will vary.

"Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition."
-Thomas Jefferson

The only good thing I can say about the delusional fools at these occupy events is that they see and understand that our government has become entirely too corrupt to be worthy of governing. The flaw in their argument is that their remedy for the fact is empowering said government to do more than it should. I say, if you want the U.S.A to be a clone of Europe.....then move to Europe, and enjoy your stay.

Id have to disagree and say that there are liberals and conservatives, left and right wings there. Its a mixed crowd not all or even most revolving around a socialist ideaology.

And I dont think their remedy is to empower the government more and hand over more responsibilities than they already have. I am pretty sure its the opposite. They want the government having less input in our lives. They ultimately all do want the Federal Reserve gone which is government ran. That is the only common goal i see amongs the OWS people.

I agree. The problem is that nobody is ready to stop taking handouts. We are a society with way to many grasshoppers and not enough ants.
