I don't know anyone like that. My parents are my best friends; they would help me with anything. They'd be the one's bailing me out of jail if it ever came to it, not a friend of mine. If my parents couldn't help me, I'd be fucked. The only time I think I was truly on my own was in college. My parents paid for that, I lived on campus with friends, we had grocery money, booze money, and they had drug money. So by all accounts we were set. This was the one place where my parents had no reach though. When I was in trouble I was on my own. It's by my own merit that I graduated college...my dad was there to talk to, but he couldn't help me graduate. That came down to me. I expect there to be more situations like that: where a parent can provide support but can't directly influence the outcome. Financial woes or the like? I'm not certain how I'd land if I didn't have the support of my parents at this juncture.
