I have a computer science degree with a focus on Java, but I also know C++ and C#. Made a 3D game (more of an engine, I guess) in C# for my final project in senior year. Built off the old XNA framework before Microsoft killed that. Haven't done much programming since I graduated (2 years ago), unfortunately. Just system admin in a consulting firm, but I'm looking to switch over to do some GWT programming within the same project later this year. Anyone have any experience with GWT? Seems pretty interesting.

Out of curiousity -- when you guys code, do you guys listen to music? And if so, what type/kind of music? Or do you not listen to music while you code?

It's always an on-going experiment, but I've listened to many types of music while coding or learning some new code technique, but I feel as if listening to NO music at all is best for me. Would be nice to hear everyone's opinion on this.

House music works for coding for some reason, lol

Anyone have any luck with computer science internships? How was the job search after getting your degree? Good companies to apply for? I need to be out of retail asap

I'll listen to Pandora, like The Shinns Radio or Death Cab for Cutie Radio.

You know, it's quite funny, the title doesn't contain any programming language's name :p
Yep, I'm a C/C++ programmer with quite a few years of experience; and for me that's "the" programming language - immensely powerful, no silly restrictions, easy to work with but requiring care, discipline and experience; and it's in continuous development so it's pretty much as modern as it gets.

I'm listening any kind of music which I like and won't distract me from my work. Something quiet, instrumental, for example:

I started out doing axonometric drawings with pen and ink on vellum.
I bought myself an apple II to mess around with. Then got laid off.
I was able to transfer over to a programming job with Fortran on a Terak CP/M system and because I could get the dot matirx printers to do things nobody else there could.
Got into the VM 370 and SQL, then we got some Apollos, AIX and Sun boxes where I taught myself *nix and C.
Started hand coding PostScript when the first lazers came out and did well with that.
Ran across Perl 3 on usenet and started using that for reporting, then set up web servers when those came out.
Might still have some usenet discussions with Larry Wall stashed away.
Now, it's mostly XML coding, and if I need heavier duty web/SQL I go to perl 'cause there's a module available for more than I can even think of.

Finally got an ASUS TF700 last month. It's got the vim-touch app on it now, so I'm content for the moment 8)

What's XML coding? It's markup, are you talking about XSL/T?

When i'm at work, I am always listening to music. Honestly, it helps me concentrate. Its not subjective to a certain kind either, I mean I can listen to screaming shit and it doesn't bother me

It kind of gets me in sync and in a "flow". I'm not as hardcore with programming as a lot of others in here so maybe for the more complicated stuff it wouldn't work but seems to do it for me.
