Toyota or Subaru? The shifter feels like a GR STi. Actually, the entire car had a Subaru feel to it. I forgot Toyota had anything to do with the car. lol

It's an Aisin gearbox, loosely derived from the IS250 IIRC.

Now adjust for inflation in 2013 dollars: $38,300.

FR-S: $25,500.

Obviously a used S2000 isn't going to cost $34k now, but looking at what that car cost new and what it offered vs. the FR-S new and what it offers is truly impressive. For an extra $9,000 all you got was an extra 37hp and a retractable top. I think I'd take the FR-S based on that alone. The used car market levels that out a little, but a low-low-mileage AP2 S2000 still books for $25-27k.
When the frs convertible comes out it will be closer to 30k. And 40hp difference is
bout 20% more when you are talking about a 200 hp car. Idk what demand was like for new s2000s but it didn't have pure pricing so u could potentionally get it for less than invoice back then.

By 2009 you couldn't give away S2000's, so you could potentially get them for ~$30k, yes. To me, a convertible roof does not add value anyway.

In no shape or form does this affect the comparison.

The S2000 was designed for the $38k price point, the FR-S was designed for the $25k price point.

Not sure where you got the $38k price point, but there was no rival to the s2k (with in its price range) when it was out. Anything better, you had to pay i.e. Cayman S, Elise.

I'd argue that a 370Z was a better car for the money...

The fact that the FR-S is so damn beautiful still beats anything that the S2K has. IMHO. I personally like the 370z I can't lie. When I see one cross an intersection while I'm at a red light I can't help but to eyeball the hell out of it. Nobody can argue that it's a bad car. It's a good-looking and powerful sports car. Just too damn expensive... And not as gorgeous as the twins

The 370zs aren't that reliable, obviously the twins haven't been out long enough to see long term reliability though. The s2k was and is a great car just to expensive for the people that wanted it. That's the advantage of the twins, 25k is a great price for the RnD that it has into it abd sets it in the price range for its following. Plus the 1k back for students!

Depends on what kinda car we're talking about...
The 370Z is a better 2-seat luxosport sedan for the money.
The S2000 is the better sports car

The S2000 is definitely the more attractive looking car IMO. The FRS/BRZ looks good, but falls victim to mandated safety regulations that make it look somewhat bloated and thick. Just looking at how high the hood line is makes that blatantly obvious. The designers did the best they could, but the sad reality is that its becoming increasingly difficult to design attractive cars in the face of retarded regulation.

Copied from s2ki...

Having said that... after driving the car, I had a feeling that I should sell my toys to get the FR-S. This is a feeling of being more financially responsible & liquidating $$ for more important things. However, the drive did not give me the feeling of want or desire for the car. Perhaps this will change at the track or autocross? I feel a bit indifferent about the 86 now. It's awesome, no doubt. But eh.. nothing special to go Lady GaGa about.
