Miata to.. AW11 MR2?

Thoughts of ruining the resale on my Miata prohibit me from really digging in to modify it, and I think I've fallen in love with the AW11. I could sell my car and buy an older MR2 with enough left over to have some fun toying with it.

How stupid is this? I realize it's pretty much an all-around downgrade, but that still hasn't stopped me from looking into it. Could anyone chime in with how much of a downgrade I'd be expecting? Familiar with the AW11, maybe know of some quirks that would prevent enjoying tinkering with one? I'd love to hear.

I feel like I've got a smokin' little gymnast girlfriend, but for some reason want to dump her for this older oddball office lady. I was never really into Toyotas until coming here, so I have you guys and gals to thank for this.

I'll say go for it, AW11 are so nice to toss around, light weight, parts on junkyard. I remember a friends who had one with a silvertop 20V 4ag it screamed like a girl, i mean with a open ITB's. if your afraid to mod your mx-5 this you wont care, only thing is... its a bitch to work on, small engine bay cramp space.

x2

My buddy had one and it was a blast to drive, but is tight spaced in the engine bay. Make sure you stretch out before working on the car. lol

Go for it. I have an infatuation for A-dubs but never had luck picking up a keeper... so my quest continues. A novelty item to appreciate with its semi-exotic MR layout/retro charm. Feast on this...

Nice videos!
a supercharger would be cool for either but im pretty sure he was talking about the mr2. also the supercharger route would be cheaper than the 20v for a couple reasons but i will admit that the 20v is way cooler. the miata is the better car but the mr2 with a 20v is something fierce and if you care about this street credit/female image that is a badass car. but what you need to do is check out ffp superchargers before you decide

AW11 MR2SC's were fun cars, but IMO, the weight gain outweighs the SC. Get a NA AW11, they are much more fun.

Which one you'll enjoy more is a tough one.. drive both and see which you like the best. A few years ago I sold one of the nicest MR2SC's in the country (in terms of originality, mileage, condition). I loved driving it but the owner didn't dig the car that much which is why it was sold. He then went to Miatas, but has sold those as well (his Miata wasn't as nice as the MR2SC, but it still had only 35k and was a red 91 in pretty great shape).

It's fairly hard to find a truely nice car, so if you want one to be really nice, prepare yourself to replace most of the rubber bits and so one.

There seems to be one with fresh paint going for $1500 in my area, lol.

Would be a great car to mess around in on the track or autox.

What do these things weigh after weight reduction and rollcage?

I'm always in the market for a clean Miata. If you want to sell, let me know the details.

5(five) lbs! lol

There isnt as big of an aftermarket for the aw 20v compared to the miata (i think).

Necrobump.

All the AW11s I've shown an interest in were sold before I could even take a look at them. Started to look at the W20s, and test drove one today (a 91 NA), but that only made me appreciate the Miata even more. How rare is power steering in MR2s? I think the manual rack was my ultimate dealbreaker.

I have been lurking for a long time here (registered a few days ago), but I had to post and say thanks for sharing those videos. Really good watch on my Saturday afternoon.

what about the SW20 didn't you like? power steering is actually quite common in SW20 MR2s. how much are you looking to spend? there are a few pretty nice turbos for sale on the mr2 forum...
