Even if you bought out of state as long as you paid Georgia Sales Tax, you should be able to opt in.

One would think so, but the released info says otherwise. Wouldn't hurt to try opting in anyway.

I called the Fulton county tag office and they said the car had to be purchased in Georgia. If the bill of sale is not from a GA dealer, you are out of luck. The first line of the affidavit to opt-in specifically states "purchased in Georgia." They are basically penalizing people who bought out of state. Going forward if you buy out of state you still just have to pay the 6.5% new fee, no ad valorem tax but if you happened to buy a car in the opt-in period you get screwed.

The other crappy thing about the new fee is the fee on people coming from out of state. My wife and I came here in 2007 with two WRXs we would have ended up paying close to $2500 on with this new fee and in reality sold both cars within a year and a half of moving here. We paid maybe $600 in ad valorem tax and it is tax deductible, this new fee isn't because it's not technically a tax.

Converted both of mine this morning. Got there at 8:15 and it would have taken less than 15 minutes after they opened had the title program not gone down. Ended up being "next in line" for 2 hours.

Bottom line, if you bought any car from a dealer in Georgia in 2012 and paid sales tax, its a no brainer to do it. They look up the "fair market value" of the car, and calculate 6.5% of that. Then they subtract the sales tax you paid in 2012 for the car.

So, rather than paying $275 ad valorum tax for the FR-S I paid less than $4.00 and now have only a $20 tag fee per year. Since I already paid the sales tax, its an all around win.

If you bought an expensive car from an individual in 2012 and didn't pay the sales tax, it may make sense to not convert, but that is about the only way it makes sense.

By the way, at least in Cobb County, there is a form you can mail in to do the conversion as long as you do it in advance of your tag renewal. I didn't have that option because my tags are due this week.

Based on the calculator it is going to cost me $3.64 for the FR-S and $0 for the Suburban to convert them.
Yep mine's due in April, but I'll probably get it done as soon as I can. My tag office is only open from 9:30 - 4:30 every week day, and I work from 8 - 5. I've always hated how they do that... makes no sense.

Jeez.. it's gone up that much?

I don't have to renew until the end of the year.. but honestly I don't even feel like bothering to find out now.. I'll just wait and either be disappointed or pleasantly surprised several months from now.

What did they use to calculate the fair market value?

Don't really know, as it's done by their system. I'm guessing KBB or some other reference on the backend. Th FR-S was valued at A little over $24K and my '04 Suburban Z71 was valued right at $10K.

I read part of an article last night that said something to the extent that you have to request this prior to March 1, if you purchased between january 1, 2012 and feb 28, 2013. Anyone know if that was extended? Sounds like it may have been if you just did it yesterday...
