Opti-Coat vs ResistAll?
Anyone know any key differences between the Opti-Coat and ResistAll on the exterior part of the car?

ResistAll is one of many trade names used to describe a synthetic paint sealant, usually applied by dealers at a massive up-charge. It is a straight up high durability paint sealant; like the ones you can get online for $19.99 and apply yourself easily. They (ResistAll, Xzilon, Glare, Symtec, etc) all wear off within about 6 months (depending on maintenance). They offer no scratch resistance. They normally come with a 5 year warranty if dealer applied (inferring they last 5 years, they don't); to maintain the warranty the fine print will mention re-application every year, which no one does (so it's a great sell for dealers). The warranty will cover random stuff like paint flaking (hah!). It may cover decent stuff like bird poop etchings or acid rain, but will also require all work be performed by the dealer (so a kid with a rotary that he's been using paint time for 4 months).
Opti Coat/Guard is a ceramic coating; it leaves a ~1-2 micron coating on your paint that is slightly harder than your clear coat. So it'll offer some swirl/marring resistance. It will not wear via chemicals, so it is essentially permanent unless you choose to abrade it away. It can be sold with a warranty in the US if applied by an authorized installer. It can be purchased commercially and applied yourself, but with no warranty. In short; I think I can go on a limb and say opti coat has proven itself (it's been out ~5 years and shows clear evidence of lasting at least that long). The dealer applied sealants, are, well, a lot of money for very little result. |

John, I apply opti coat pro and cquartz finest for my customers. But have also used cal-tex's resist all products for about 15 years. Resist all isn't a bad product and if you've already paid for it then at least you'll get a detail every year for free if you take it in as instructed in the fine print of the warranty. If you haven't paid for it looking into the 2 coating I mentioned above, they are the best at different things depending on what you are looking for.

Not sure, I am actually headed to the dealer later on today to ask for the fine print on ResistAll, supposedly they can reapply resistall on the car every year until the 5 year warranty is over.

ResistAll - not worth it and that's not my opinion but an input from a detailer's wife that does attorney work.
I did Opti Coat a client's car that had ResistAll applied to it already. It looks like a greasy mess and stripped it all off before starting. He made the mistake of getting it because the dealership pressured him to get it. But it's your decision... Last edited by drew935; 03-20-2013 at 08:36 PM. |

Actually that's incorrect. It is 1-2 microns. You couldn't get 3-5 microns even spraying it on. This info is direct from Chris at Optimum. Not sure where you're getting your info Drew, but its off.
