Unhappy And now my car is broked

So i was driving down the highway yesterday when the coolant temp shot through the roof. I lost throttle and immediately parked the car on the side of the road. Got it towed to my friendly local shop. Today they call and say the car's head gaskets are shot. It's a $1000 total repair on a car closing in on 180,000 miles. My dad, the title carrier, says it's not worth repairing that motor.

At this point, i'm looking for advice. My options are pretty much...
  • Replace the motor
  • Replace the car
  • fix the damage and pray for the best

Anybody care to chime in?

Replacing the engine might be a no good option as you may end up with a bad one too. I'd just fix it and use it, or sell it and buy a better car.

I think you should either replace the motor or the car itself if you don't want uncertain future with the car.
How long are you going to keep the car if you replace the motor?
What is the resale value of the car?
How much are you going to pay for the next car? and what is its annual depreciation?

^This. You might not get a lot of money for your car, but if you get an old civic for 9 months that should save you money till the FR-S/BRZ comes out.

They sure don't make the Impalas like they used to! Try and contact different shops to get it fixed the cheapest and get rid of it.

Ya know, it's funny, up until yesterday, this car has been damn near bulletproof. I didn't necessarily fall into it by choice. It was a relief from my dakota (a monthly visitor to the garages).

  • If we replace the motor, it'll probably stay in the family till it starts completely falling to pieces, as it is currently the best running car we have (barring this recent incident)
  • KBB $3200 without a working engine
  • No idea about that yet, currently looking for prices on engine replacements

"Now antifreeze is everywhere. hopeing waterpump but probably intake gasket I never did like chevy growing up influenced from grandpa. I guess now I know why. chevy piece of sh*t"

That's it right there.

I have a big distrust of american cars, after pushing through 2 of them in less than 2 years... I'm also learning all to well the rule that you don't buy cars from family/friends...

Get a 240sx or a miata meanwhile, after you sell this impala. Then make enough $$ then sell beater and get ft-86 as stated above

I vote on miata. kbb said $3200w/o engine right? You can get decent condition miata for $1.5k~$3k. Miata get hellova good gas mile & you can get used to FR car. win win solution!

Yeah, i've become pretty keen of miatas, disregarding nthe fact that im 6'4". We're still weighing our options, but a miata or some kind of fairly capable beater would be ideal.

Honestly, the only real chance i have for ft-86ing is if i get a graphic design job for this video game, and right now, they're waiting for a funding arrangement to see if they can stay afloat.
