This guy has amazing credentials. European raised motor head, Maserati racing mechanic, car collector (30+ at one time, mostly MB). Has worked on, rebuilt, restored and driven nearly every car you can think of. Hes in a VERY high-end neighborhood NYC suburb.
Claims, hands down (and in a whisper) the best car ever made is a Lexus!
Amazing company with amazing quality. Second on his list is Honda.
He LOVES Mercedes and BMW and will defend them to the end BUT if you want a well designed, engineered and built car you get it from a Japanese manufacturing plant! Funny how most North American Japanese cars are made in America while most American Cars are made in Mexico or Canada. The best cars are made in Japan, then Germany. But remember the Italians make the most beautiful cars, art on wheels.

Personally, my only major issue is with steering wheel controls - I think those are tantamount to a safety feature. It's hard to change the music or make a call on this car without being distracted by looking down for however long it takes to change.

To address your larger point, technology has advanced. You'd hear me complain all damn day if I were stuck using DOS at work instead of Windows 7, or if I had to access the internet on the go (work-related or not) from an old Nokia, or if I had to crank the car to start it. Bringing up criticism of the car has its' place in advancing the automotive industry, and having the attitude that "it cannot be criticized because of the relative primitiveness of cars 60 years ago" is stagnation at its' finest.

Honestly, do you think people from your era advanced to automotive industry by going "this car is awesome compared to what used to exist, so we shouldn't say that 3 gears are too little"? Hell no! They went "Ok, this car is awesome, but I really need a fourth gear", and people in the industry responded to that criticism. If people never said that 3 gears were really too few for a car, we wouldn't end up with a 6 gear transmission today.

Of course, whining and criticism are two different things, but many members here have the same reaction to both - massive resistance.

A - It isnt the same car? They have the same engine, same body. Cosmetics / Exterior doesnt make a huge difference.

B - Im not crying about it, simply im just wondering why did the scion frs get some lower-end package, while the brz limited package is standard for the gt86 in japan.

C- I have neither, but interested in one.

It confuses me a little too, here in Australia we have the option of the GT86 or the BRZ. The BRZ is a single package with optional extras, and comes in a 37k Aus.

The 86 on the other hand has 2 packages, the GT, and the GTS.

For AT prices, the GT comes in at about 33k Drive away, and the GTS comes in at 42 Drive away.

GTS86 (What I purchased) comes with push button, LSD, DRLs, Heated seats, climate control, higher grade wheels (better rated rubber + 17 Inch rims) and a 4 vented disc break package, Xenon head light package, Premium Trims, Alcantara perferated leather seats and touch screen SatNav.

The LSD and break package alone easily make up the price difference, and it looks to me like the FRS is basically the same as the baseline GT model over here (Keeping in mind all manual models here, GT and GTS come with LSD, where as the GT AT does not, for some reason.)

I really saw no sense in going for the base line GT unless you were using it for a track car or couldn't afford the extra, the LSD and break package alone make the extra cash worth it. Say it was just luxury items, and not preformance changing parts, I would be inclined to say the GT would be fine.

But I can't see the sense in selling one kind of FR-S in the states, It seems like you guys have them coming out your ears, so maybe toyota are trying to make as much profit with a small margin of error?

At the moment in AUS you're looking at a 4 month+ waiting period on an order, there is no such thing as a 86 sitting in a car lot waiting for an owner at the moment. I kind of do feel sorry for you guys not having that option to upgrade though, seems weird.

I'm not sure exactly what the brake package is on the GTS (so it may be a bit different), but the FR-S does have the LSD and ventilated disc brakes - the two things you say make the GTS a worthwhile upgrade.

I was just mentioning it because that's the intent with Scion's trim - provide the base package without compromising performance parts like an LSD. They only have one trim at Scion for any given model. The BRZ is more geared towards having the luxury items, and they probably have more than one trim specifically to make up for the lack of higher end options in the US due to the Scion brand.

As for why they chose Scion, it's basically a failing brand at this point. Their best sellers aren't selling nearly as much as they did a few years ago, and they're using the FR-S to give it a boost. They knew that the FR-S was going to be selling well when it came out, so it's a safe way for them to pump the brand back to life.

Keeping in mind our AU prices on cars are super inflated compared to the states and everywhere else basically, apart from the UK, they seem to get the real short end of the stick haha.
