Look up science while your at it, you'll just drive your self insane. The term car enthusiast is to generalized, it really means nothing. Theres so many different types of car people out there, people who only drag race, people who only like Jap cars or American cars, people who only buy cars to do track days and people who only drift. To say one car can fit all of these "car enthusiasts" is foolish and without thought. Sure you can use the excuse "Oh, but he only meant people who like RWD cars" but its such an overused term that it can't be used. Cars is a lot like music. Okay you like music? What type of music? Jazz? Metal? What type of Jazz and Metal? Death metal, black metal, thrash metal, stoner metal? Modal Jazz, bebop, jazz fusion? You can't be too general because it doesn't do justice to anything, but you don't have to be too organized and specific as well. You just have to stop using the word! Driver car is a whole other argument, that term is somewhat marketing folly as well, along with the term car enthusiasts. Then you have a factor of what it means to non car people, if you call your self a car enthusiast in front of non car people, they'll just laugh at you inside their head. It sounds too anal, to douchebagish and even inappropriate in some case. Its like the word maybe. So call me maybe? |

I think its fair to say that a person's relationship with their car as well as their motivations for making such a large purchase is highly personal. We see it everyday on this board about how people will debate what makes a "sports car", a "driver's car", or what it means to be an "enthusiast" and the answers are as unique as the people making them. In that regard, you are right with everything you said. Personally though, I think people that have similar interests, whether it be cars, a certain car, or really anything enjoy interacting with other people with similar interests. Branding themselves "enthusiasts" is a great way to allow people to identify with other similar-minded people. So while I do understand your point of view, I am still very content to call myself an "FT86 enthusiast". :happy0180: Scott

I later got an 86 GT Black with T-Tops MT 5-speed. Not a bad car, it just fell apart starting around 50k miles, by 125k it was a rattling, leaking, sun-faded beater that I got too much money for. Kids! |

Cayman Base Car is $51k, 2.9 l flat 6, 265 hp@7200 rpm, 221 lb at 6000, RWD 6-speed MT, MacPherson Front wheel wishbones, Strut rear, 2930 lbs, 0-60 5.6, 165pmh top speed. 27 mpg HWY. ($7k +/- in tax) NOW, an older (late 80's) 911 is affordable to not just purchase but to maintain if you allow for it. And I have to tell you, the FR-S is not much different comparing old to new. OLD Muscle cars drive like SHIT! Even the old Corvettes aren't that awesome. Id MUCH rather drive this new Toyota GT car than lets say a 1984 Corvette. I bet the GT86 out performs it in every way! Mine was that gorgeous burgundy color but it had the awful red interior. After I threw a rod through my oil pan (deliberately) I dropped in a 400chp 351C that I picked up and rebuilt from a 1971 Mach 1 Mustang. After that the car was painted black and the interior was changed to black. It looked much better then. I still have some (print) pictures of that car and the build in one of my boxes somewhere. It looked real nice parked to my black, 1968 Camaro SS 327 I had back then too. Scott

The FR-S doesn't ride or feel like a Cayman. And it's certainly not a similar type of car. My previous car was a Cayman S. |

One thing I'm learning and am a bit disappointed in is the usability / practicality of the FR-S/BRZ FOR ME isn't as good as the Cayman was. For example, putting golf clubs in the Cayman was simple and quick. I could carry two sets and a large suitcase no problem. In my BRZ, I have to put the seat down to get the clubs in. Annoying.

My buddy has a rare 71 351 BOSS. Low miles car but its been through a few motors. Years ago he pulled a 351C Australian from a VERY wrecked Pantara this guy had in the tri-state area. Blew that one a couple of years later. Best was a 351C 550HP Jack Merkel. The shear force! I had a very well re-build street rod, an 80 Z28 that just layed waste to old muscle cars and big blocks. SO MUCH HP!! SO HARD TO STOP!! |

The Cayman is smart, well thought out and not cramped like the Boxster. I have an RSX too, its about the same size and shape but roomier inside and more inviting to be comfortable. That car is also MUCH more polite and "luxury minded" - quieter, smoother motor, non cramped interior. I commonly take my 2 kids (teens) away for a week with room enough. No reason to ever sell that car until its done and the way it is at 200k its going to see 300! The FR-S is cramped, loud, jumpy and road rough. Its fun for the driver but not the passenger(s). Again, it needed to be a hatchback! |
