Of course it's a "driver's car"... They put the engine in the wrong place!

My last car had all that and I don't miss them at all. It's kind of nice to not have all the distractions. Hell, I barely even use the radio. I do like the bluetooth in the car, though. Could I live without it? Sure.

I love my FR-S, but nothing feels better then cruising down the street in my Celicas. But I definitely agree with you about people needing more, but I think that is just how people are brought up? I have always enjoyed the simpler side of things which is why I love my 75 and 77 Celicas.

I agree that the price is similar, power however is not. The fact of the matter is while you may spend near the same amount or less for a VW. You are still getting a vehicle with costly maintenance, FWD, Hatchback, etc. You cannot soley compare the two cars exclusivly on build quality because, frankly they are two very different cars. The Germans, while meticulous with their cars, have not built a comparable FR car.

The VW GTI is a grand touring car, its built for longer drives, daily driving in comfort. You simply cannot compare the two cars. If someone wants a car chaulked full of perfection yes they can buy the GTI but they will also be losing more in drivability, in my opinon, which is more valuable than perfection.

One could argue that you could just buy a VW and save on purchase price but you would also sacrifice the expirience of a RWD lightweight sports car. I've driven a GTI, reminded me of the 2003 EP3 Civic Si but sturdier/tighter.

In terms of quailty over cost comparison. The driveability, handling, overal fun aspect of the car outweighs any insignificant rattle or annoyance for most seasoned drivers. And furthermore the car looks a hell of alot better than a boxy hatchback.

I had my driver license at 14 so suck it Trebek.. Drove plenty before that but mostly the tractor variety and ranch trucks (i.e. shitty beat up pos vehicles that would not qualify for tag.)

Totally agree with the OP on this though. My first vehicle had no a/c and an AM radio .

Times have definitely changed.

Back then you had small communities where everyone knew each other, and you'd wait weeks, months maybe, for letters to get to and from people across the world. Now old people have the infinite power of all of the knowledge in the world on a device that fits in their pocket, and they use it to complain that young people complain too much.

Jest aside, I don't think it's ridiculous to expect getting good value and newer technology (especially as tech gets cheaper and more accessible) for your money. If all you had back then was what was available, that's what you got. Now we have more technology, so of course there are going to be people that want convenience. I don't care so much about climate control because I had been driving for over ten years before I owned a car with one (my GTI) and when I got it, I rarely used it. But if you grew up using it, and all of the cars your parents had that you remember use it, that's what you're used to.

Coming from the IT world, I see a lot of older people just complain about how much they hate the computer and technology and how it just makes everything harder, etc.. In that case I just shake my head and try to help them. Those that embrace it love it. Those that don't just make life harder on themselves for no reason.

No its not the car, its the term.

The term "drivers car" is the most stupid and idiotic term when it comes to motoring.

Same with "Oh, its a car for the car enthusiast!"
The fuck does that mean?

I cringe every time Chris Harris says it.

What the hell is a car enthusiast? Someone who likes cars?
No, its a bunch of guys sitting around the internet waiting for the next car to fap off too.

Don't call your self a car enthusiast, you'll look like the biggest moron in the room.

Naw, something even more stupid and idiotic is someone who can't communicate without using offensive language.

Not sure where you got this idea, but the MK6 GTI is worse than the FR-S when it comes to minor issues. GTI's have a bunch of issues of their own, like (1) body flex/creaking, (2) rattles, (3) leaky rear spray, (4) carbon build-up, (5) DSG mechatronics issues, (6) leaking water pumps, etc.

At least the Twins are in their first year of production on a brand-new platform. Not sure what VW's excuse is.
