Turbochargers use otherwise wasted energy from exhaust to perform positive work on the system. Turbos then, increase an engine's volumetric efficiency.

Therefore, an engine with a turbo which flows the SAME amount of air as one without will do so more efficiently.

If you put a turbo on your FR-S will it be more efficient? No. You're flowing more air.

More HP never means more gas mileage. Just remember that. Bigger injectors deff mean less gas mileage because you are using more fuel. Adding a turbo will lower your overall AMPG. Put it this way. my 2011 sti stock avg's 24MPG. After doing a full stage 2 tune and turning up the boost + exhaust n intake I started getting a AMPG of 20. Was the transition from 261WHP to 326WHP and 298WTQ to 368WTQ worth the loss of 4MPG. O hell yes. Gotta pay to play boys.

BUT you're forgetting about light throttle which can be tuned to not run more fuel but the turbo will still be spinning and pushing a little bit of extra air. I'd say to the level of a really effective cold air intake.

This is actually what manufacturers do to get that increased highway mileage.

True. I was talking in generalities. I was pointing out how a 100hp turbocharged engine can be more efficient than a 100hp N/A engine. Leaning AFR will improve MPG too but the same can likely be done with tuning alone.

I still wouldn't recommend using MPG as an excuse to blow your money on a aftermarket turbo for any car...unless that's what it takes to convince the girlfriend/wife

I agree; however it's a nice luxury that I will be finally enjoying once I can get my foot below 50% throttle lol.

Now does anyone know if compression affects MPG? Mine is sitting somewhere around 8.9:1 after my most recent mods.

93 octane. e85 will probably be 16-19mpg. I'll followup with that data in the next week or so. Going to be tuned on Thursday.

I'd say you'd be getting 20mpg, being that E85 burns 20% faster. Just doing the math. Good thing E85 is 20% cheaper so it's not really like you are spending more money on gas. You're just spending it more often because your gas gets used faster.

In that case, get a beater and make your mistakes on that.

Unless you've got tons of cash you probably don't want to buy a brand new car only to immediately void the warranty.
