This thread is pointless. No use discussing that. Mazda is already "taken" by Alfa. Honda has to build their S2000 successor or baby NSX on their own, same goes for Nissan and their Silvia successor.

while i kinda see what you are saying, the whole vs forum is pointless. its largely speculative and so much of the stuff on this forum is pointless. let them dream.

It's not like Mazda is BFFs with Ford anymore, so they could partner with anyone now. They have the technology/platforms to make a sports car but they don't have nearly as many resources to spend on a halo car as some bigger companies might.

Discussing "Alpha" vs. "Beta" is not really pointless if they can bring some objective insights or share some subjective point of views, but unfortunately, in most cases, on all forums (VAG, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, JDM, Corvette, Mustang,...) it turns out to be that way: pointless.

As said, they are already doing that with Alfa Romeo. Deal signed some days ago.

Kind of a giant waste, IMO.

Why would the two companies that've built the best semi-affordable RWD sports cars in the last decade work together to build only one car? We'd all be the losers, because there would be fewer greats.

Mazda needs to keep doing what it's doing with slightly more leg room, and Honda needs to get off its dead ass.

I would hate to see Honda in the mix. I can't think of a single budget minded performance car they have made. They would probably try to make some S2K/NSX with some god awful rotary. If Mazda would just pull their head out of their asses and make a non-rotary performance car they may be able to get in the fight. The Miata has been in the mix so long that people have pretty much forgotten or refuse to drive one.

thats a problem with people, not mazda. no matter how "forgoten" the miata is, you arent going to find a more raced car. also, the miata is not even as old as the rx so...

I'd love to see an MX-5 coupe as a competitor. Seems like a hatchback would be feasible, which might be a selling point. I'd imagine that they would either need to price it a bit below the FRS or raise the horsepower.

there will never be a coupe miata. also, power isnt really relevant. if it was, nobody would be on this forum. the miata has always been slower than its competition and it has been around for over 20 years. i dont think a solid 6 month run from the frs is going to change their gameplan. the speed miata was a sales failure. i think mazda figured the miata out a long time ago.

It seems to not have been mentioned yet but Mazda and Toyota have announced a partnership on a new vehicle, however it will not be a sports car. It will be built on the next generation Mazda 2 platform in Mazda's Mexico plant. Supposedly it's for another small hatchback but is not the new Yaris. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Yaris phased out and this new vehicle take it's place in the line up or fit into Scion's lineup, possibly replacing an existing model like the xD.

I just keep hoping that the Mazda-Alfa relationship spawns anything close to this. Miata fun with Alfa styling.

I saw that. They are in talks to share the Mazda2 chassis and factory in Mexico.

It sounded like Toyota was looking to replace the Yaris, which doesn't make sense since it's more successful than the Mazda2. I wonder if it has anything to do with Naruse's RWD hatchback baby. Probably not but .

I can get behind this, if it's something good.

Well, the Yaris is more successful than the Mazda but is incredibly boring to drive, the 2 actually handles rather well, its only real let down is the engine and clutch feel (also, the styling but that is subjective). I likely wouldn't even consider selling my Mazda if it had a bit more power, honestly, it realistically could use about another 20hp, and it would be just fine. I know I sound like most people out there, who never seem to get enough, but it's 2013, 120hp doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Also, this is purely from my observation and has no backing in hard evidence, the Fit is seems to be much more successful than the even the Yaris, for good reason, and TMC may be looking to get a little bigger piece of the market.
