Electronic Rust Protection

I went for the dealer installed e-rust protection because it's a new car, and will not be used in the winter although stored outside under breezeway with a cover, and I'd prefer not to oil spray her if I could. Southern ON here.

What do you guys think of the e-rust protection, and did you get it for your FR-S, BRZ?

Edit: Ok, went back asswards and searched after my post. I shouldn't have gone for it. Poop.

it's widely agreed that this module doesn't work very well on cars, and it's frigg'n expensive. I believe it works well on ships though. Convert your BRZ into a ship!

My friend had it installed on his 2006 mazda 3 when he bought it used from the dealer.

He replaced the 2 rocker panels last year, the trunk was resprayed and it still rust. Gimmick.

My bosses husband decided to have it installed on his new dodge pickup. (this is 2-3 years ago now)

The truck was all clean and shiney waiting for them at the dealership on delivery day. .. I don't know all the details of exactly what happened, but it wouldn't start.. next thing smoke rose from under the hood. Either the e-rust thingy was defective and shorted or it was installed improperly.. main wiring harness was fried supposedly.

Needless to say he went and bought a buick instead.

I think those things are like those little boxes you plug into the outlet in your home to keep fleas out, or cockroaches, or mice.. they never work..

Snake oil
Works on sea-going vessels, bridges and oil drilling rigs because they are submerged in salt water all the time.
I know a materials scientist from the NRC that worked on this technology for ships and he confirmed it does nothing on a car.
Shame on dealers for still trying to foist these gadgets on unsuspecting buyers.
My 2 cents

If you accidentally hook it up backwards, does the vehicle rust faster?

A complete rip off. Annual oil spray is the ONLY method proven to be effective in resisting (note I said resist, not absolutely prevent. No method is 100% just due to the natural corrosive effects of moisture long term). As mentioned above, yes works on ship because they are submerged in salt water, because that's whats needed for the electronic reaction to actually be effective. On cars? Just another profit centre for dealers from uninformed customers(not an insult to you, just a statement of fact. We can't know everything, hence why we share on these forums).

I hear you, and everyone else. Not my proudest moment; knowing there would be resources like this, I really should have known better going in. My bad.

If they haven't actually installed it yet, see if you can change your deal. They may not have any problems with your exchanging it for ext warranty or something like that.

It's already installed. Car is waiting for me to pick up. I'm ~100km from the dealer and as this will be my summer car I'm waiting for a bit of a break in the weather so I don't have to drive in any snow/slush/salt with her. When I purchased it was going to be an end of March/April delivery. Then all of a sudden it's there. I'm really trying to be patient. And I hate rust.

It sound like your friend who is an electrical engineer isn't really a good friend and probably not really an electrical engineer.

These things are a straight up joke.

I am just a few km from my dealer - my car is at their compound right now - I am getting it flat-bed towed to my laneway - NO salt for my summer car. Everyone thinks I am nuts except one of my friends and he is as particular about his cars too. I just hope the dealer car-jockeys aren't taking it for spins around the block - it is AT so I suspect they won't look at it twice I had the same delivery planned Apr 1 but the car was in town before the end of Jan!

Sounds very similar to my situation. And no, you're not nuts to want to avoid the winter salt for your summer car, it just makes sense to me.

I did pick my Ultramarine last Friday as it was a high pressure sunny day. Just hit a couple of wet spots on the way home and she didn't get too dirty. Haven't driven it since, but she sure looks purty just sitting there Ok winter, time for you to go!
