Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but could you explain how the AppRadio actually works? It seems that it does not have Android inbuilt, rather it is just a controller for your portable Android device. Is this correct?

If that's the case, does it rely in the power of the portable device it's connected to? Does it have a sound card good enough to output high-end quality sound?

Thanks for the write up btw. I had ignored this unit before I read this, but will now do a bit more research and consider it.

Cheers

It forms 2 connections with the guest device. One is over bluetooth (to transfer the screen "clicks"), and the other over HDMI (to transfer the image). Using the Pioneer app, you're limited to whatever apps, it approves (believe me, not many). However, with the ARLiberator app, you have full access to the guest OS.

So, you would use the AppRadio itself to play the FM and iPod. And use the guest device for everything else. The guest device needs to be rooted an support HDMI and Bluetooth. Since it transfers sound over HDMI, the head unit does all the work at converting the quality.

For things like, say... map calculations, does it use the guest device's processor or AppRadio's? In general, is the speed limited by the guest device's CPU?

I'll try to find a local unit and have a play. =)

Thanks

All the processing is done on the guest device. Think of it like remote desktop. You are "remoting" into the phone/tablet from the radio.

I'm going to guess that this thing should be able to connect to my samsung tablet so I can use torque, but will still be able to do the whole bluetooth bit with my iPhone so I can make calls?

That is a good question. If your Samsung tablet supports MHL/HDMI output, then yes it should work. Not sure if the radio can connect to two devices at once over bluetooth, though.

I'm using an HTC One S. There are videos showing the GS3 working. There is no app for this on the iPhone, even if it is jailbroken.

@2forme YOU NEVER FAIL SIR! THANKS!

If you get time, can you make a video showing full functionality. Ie. Navigation while music playing (if thats even possible) Email, text messaging, netflix, internet, movies already stored on device, you know, the full works.

Also, here's a biggie... What about quad core devices like the GN2 that can run a split screen. Do you think this HU can mirror that?
