Primary Use of the FT-86: If it's not going to be a high value target for thieves, I may try to DD it.

i think this car will be on the lookout by thieves...

i mean civics and evos are always on the high list.

I remember my father always had an electronic cut off switch in his glove box and also a steering wheel lock.

I've driven my '99 MX5 (no DSC, TCS, or even ABS) through the last couple winters in hilly western MA no problem.

Get snow tires.

Just like you should do with any vehicle during inclement weather, increase your following distance and drive conservatively (especially on curves and downhill).

The difference with a lightweight RWD car is that getting started on an icy uphill and going through deep unplowed heavy snow can be challenging. I keep a small shovel and small bucket of kitty litter in the trunk, just in case (but I've not needed the litter and only used the shovel once when I got plowed in after work).

Those cars (civics in particular) are so popular amongst thieves because there are 100s of thousands of them on the road and parts are easily interchangeable in a variety of makes and models so it is easy for them to chop them up and part them out. The FR-S won't have that problem for while.

I don't think Evos are high on the list of popular-to-steal cars...

I doubt it. You could use the motor only in other subarus and there are much more powerful motors to steal instead.

Civics, Integras, etc = engines bolt in a large number of cars, and the highest % stolen are the faster models, or cars with swaps already. Those others are stolen just because they are easy to steal or because other parts are wanted.

I really can't see anyone having an interest in FR-S/BRZ parts to put in their STI or anything :P

That's kind of a blanket statement. I hope this car isn't JUST appealing to those who are forced to choose it because they can't afford something better. I know i'd choose it over several cars that are a lot more expensive.

And look at pretty much all BMWs. RWD and they are used to commute in German winters.

Although I kind of wonder how much the aids help for ice and snow?

RE: RWD cars for DD in Winter:

As long as the car is higher than the snow is deep you will be fine running good snow tires. Remember, people survived the better part of a century in RWD cars before the FWD boom in the last quarter of the 20th C.

<--Learned snow driving in my '78 Nova.

I only manage about 3000km (1860mi) a year. I'm about to go to work abroad for the next 5-6 months, so that number is likely to dip even lower.

The next question is: So why do I even have a vehicle? Simple, when I drive I enjoy it (for the most part anyways).

Plans for your FT86

Did a quick search but couldn't find something similar, so i'm starting one!

What are your plans for your Ft86?

what kinda vision do you have for your car?

track?
street?
drift?!
DD?

for myself, i want the 86 to be a DD/cruiser. Mainly focusing on sound. If i do any performance mods, i'm hoping to import TRD stuff. I have a thing with TRD.

I'm also wondering, anyone here considering doing a panda color scheme?

If I got one, it would primarily be a DD. Autocross and track days a handful of times a year maybe. I'd just put on a nice sounding catback and some good street tires.

Street/track. Hoping the reputable companies like Greddy, HKS & APS etc develop a F/I kit for it. I love boost! I'll probably get it in black so i'll just keep it smooth & clean with subtle cf add-ons that are likely to be made for it.

Depending on the weight factor, I will opt for a set of narrow & wide 19" wheels for street.
