It comes back to the old riddle: what's worth more in the desert--a gallon of water or a pound of gold?

They're all designed to be light and rigid but come apart and dissipate energy in a crash. That equates to being built out of pressed tin foil glued together at the edges. They're not built to last, they're built to be replaced like plastic cups.

But that's ok, stick with it if it does what you need it to do.
upon reflection, the car is "unibody" and as such IS designed to "accordian"
upon impact,so i guess the standing advice is NOT to hit anything with it,or get hit,and the car theoretically should last a long time. for what it's designed to do,provide reliable ,economical, transportation it does this very well, however it is NOT a frs.it is a boring ass car to drive, and the main reason for considering the twins, and i guess i agree with you in this regard, in that none are built very well,to include the frs/brz in my estimation.

Yeah new cars just aren't built to "last" .. I dont foresee many of our current cars rolling across auction blocks 40 years from now and fetching 7digit prices.

Maybe rolling across the scrap block and fetching lunch money prices? Or already recycled into new cars.

Regardless for what it is and how they're all built the only thing I can really knock this car for is that its not more adjustable in the suspension department in factory trim. All else I really like. Having a few months of daily driver seat time in this car I really do think it was executed well. Of course that's aside of the initial run mishaps. Of which I really haven't had any issue with anyway.

yup! makes ya wonder if it is really worthwhile throwin' money at cars these days.expensive, and for the most part, just "slapped" together.smart money says to just keep what ya got,and drive it into the ground, instead of f**king around trading them in all the time!the only way to realize any value is to keep 'em as long as possible IF new,or do the "rat" thing and buy "beaters " for short money,THEN drive those into the ground, and just get another and do it all over again.if i do go for the twin,it WILL be the last "new" on i'll ever buy. run the (s.o.b.) forever if i can! on a separate note:it will probably end up being sent back to japan 20,or 25 years from now to be recycled in to new sheet steel for stampings for cars. japan has to import all it's iron to make new steel,so some body will "buy" the car again at some point. just sayin'

my parents 2003 mercedes c-class had a shit load of maintenance and CEL issues. Plus cosmetic issues like, disc-changer getting stuck, cup holder not folding in, moon roof not working, etc.

I thought by going above the $30000 price range, this would have been a non-issue. If anything, I would have called that car a crap box. Oh and the car had less than 80K miles on it.

I watched this before buying mine. LOL'd.

At this point, the only thing I use this car for is going back and forth to work, and for lengthy drives on the Weekend (like blasting down to San Diego.), it's a fun little car to drive, but I'm reminded every time I have to basically squat to get in it that it's not a long-term vehicle for me, nor is it the end-all of cars.
