MPurchased my FR-S on 12-20-2012 with VIN starting in the 71XXXX's (past the VIN on the TSB) and the chirping just started for me around 1500 miles. Guess it just falls under normal warranty?

Yes it does. You can try taking your car to one of the Subaru dealerships in your area, but just know that many people are reporting the chirping returning after an arbitrary amount of miles have been driven on the new pump. There is no permanent fix at the moment, so taking it in depends on if it is absolutely driving you crazy and if you're willing to have your car out of commission for the repair.

FYI I purchased my car on the 4th of December and have had the chirping since the 2nd day of ownership. I'm at 4000 miles now, still chirps (though it's a bit more quiet after using quality gas), and the car drives great

Hey guys,

havn't even made the 1st payment. I think im hearing crickets under the hood, pretty clearly. Not sure what to do and what to expect.

Im reading alot of you did the fix and it came back. So whats scion and subaru going to do?

I read it's covered for 60k, are we just waiting until its fixed? the value of this car is going to sink if these problems keep popping up. and what if it doesnt get resolved?

Lemon law? return?

sorry guys i feel like my gf just cheated on me lol help me out.

Some people still aren't use to all the noises that come with direct injection I guess.

Get some hood insulation and you can dramatically decrease the sound of the crickets...

Steve, it's the same problem they've all been having. I got my car on 11/29/2012 and it has crickets, VIN number past the "fixed" ones or so they claim on the TSB. People have gone through 2-3 pumps and this still returns. I'm continuing to wait till there is a more concrete fix for it. There is nothing wrong with the fuel pump itself. A BRZ owner already had his car go up in flames due to a fuel pump change on the BRZ section.... I at least want to know my crickets are going away for good before the dealer touches my car.

So you think waiting is best? I'm worried no perm fix will come out. Its been a while now and replacing the pump doesn't do anything . Which I don't get when they said it should fix it stated in the doc.

Gas and temperature def play a role my cricks are gone Now but they'll be back

I'm waiting a bit longer, into summer at the latest. If there's no change in part # to a different fuel pump, I might just let it go. I'm currently trying different gas, but all the gas here in Texas has 10% ethanol in it. Shell 93 octane is giving me crickets. I've just learned to ignore it.

you make it seem if they dont get a perm fix u will just deal with it. how could you?

its under warranty they better fix it bc if not nobody here will ever buy toyota scion again.

i find this disgraceful if they dont perm fix it. ESPECIALLY since its a stupid pump. give me one that isn't so sensitive... the end.

Oh, I'm not blowing it off completely. I'm just not going to have them change multiple fuel pumps for nothing after looking at others experiences. I want to see a fix that actually is confirmed by multiple people to work.

True i just hope they fix it ya know. what if they delay it too by throwing the same pumps at every chirp.

Exactly, you've got some time. Wait on it a bit till something comes along. You do have time, but I'm with you on the crickets. They are annoying, and a new car shouldn't have them. If time starts winding down on my warranty for the powertrain, I'll grab a new pump and pray, but I'm hoping something does come along with the number of drivers who actually have the crickets.

I've seen higher than 93 octane gases actually remove the crickets which is why this isn't reported in Europe/Asia/Australia as much. Some people believe the ethanol content in US gas is the cause for it, but Subaru/Toyota say it has to deal with the heat expansion inside the HFFP that wasn't intended which causes a harmonic sound or "cricket" noise.

Guess we'll see! You'll see a thousand posts about this and new posts saying, "What's this noise coming from my engine????" without reading the thousand threads already about crickets.

Crazy how the gas plays a role. though something like expansion and contraction sounds like an easy fix. either way let's hope they think of something quick, i feel bad for those that have it worse and have already spent time replacing parts only to come back

My next door neighbor has a new VW with DI that click, ticks, and buzzes loudly with the hood up...the only reason you can't hear it that much in the cabin is the insulation under the hood.

Go ahead and try and lemon law a car for periodic chirping noises...see how that works out for you, lol
