if this whole stage 2 jazz can entail as little as an ecu and down pipe and as much as an ecu, down pipe, intake full exhaust and a custom tune, i dont know if that does anything for clarification at all.

it's easy. all these items add power. so the sti will faster than our nice and slow frs/brz. and it should "win" the auto-x. it's all i am trying to say.

lol, sorry for the lingo, there's a lot of members on here who KNOW about subaru's considering this car is A SUBARU. of course there are newcomers too.

yes that is why we race. the frs/brz dominates in the handling aspects.

im not sure a brz dominates the sti in the handling aspect. maybe in the subjective feel category but that isnt really shown in a race. i totally believe that the brz is the closest thing to a true sports car subaru has ever made but im just not sold on it being a better performer/handler than an sti.

i agree. i didn't say it beats the sti, it does dominate handling wise for what it is. a properly setup sti is stupid fast.

There's no way that this would even be close. The STI is the better all around car, at autocross, at rally, and in adverse conditions.

I am a big Subaru fan but have to go with the more experienced Subaru in this battle.

Assuming drivers of similar talent and daring, the course is determining factor number two. If the guy that drew up the course map shows up in a 'vette, the win does to STi. If he backs his miata off a trailer, the FR-S has a shot.

This reminds me of my situation w my coworker who has a slightly modded wrx. If youre thinking initial D. Thats a touge track, with lots of tight turns. A 600 hp gtr on a course like that would only use a quarter of its potential which is why the 86 could keep up. I say driver skill has a lot to do with it but also the course ultimately will determine. One with a decent amount if straight segments, the sti will pull away from the 86.

Objective handling numbers Edmunds recorded with the STI and FR-S, both on the same class of tires (extreme performance summer):

2011 STI (Dunlop SP 600 Sport)
Slalom (mph): 70.3
Skid Pad Lateral acceleration (g): 0.89
30-0 (ft): 28
60-0 (ft): 112

2013 FR-S (Yokohama Advan AD08)
Slalom (mph): 70.3
Skid Pad Lateral acceleration (g): 1.00
30-0 (ft): 28
60-0 (ft): 107

I've owned both. From a subjective perspective, the FR-S certainly feels more light and agile to drive, and the steering is quicker and offers more feedback. The main advantage for the STI is its ability to put power down early on corner exit, but if you asked me which one handled better, I'd have told you the FR-S easily.

The difference in lateral grip can be explained partly by the tires (the AD08s are stickier), but the FR-S also has inherent advantages the STI can't match. It's lighter, relatively wide and low, and has a much lower CG.

these are my $.02

i came from a highly modded 2011 sti sedan. while yes it is a absolute monster in every aspect handling took me a long time to perfect. in stock form, the STI understeer very heavily. so i compensated by having a stiffer suspension in the rear than the front. even with 275/35/18 tires all around it would still have a tendancy to understeer if i went into the corner too hot. Another issue is that it is not as easy to rate the sti, however driving it hard is a lot easier than driving the BRZ hard. with the sti, you can always compensate by adding a boot full of throttle for the AWD system to correct your mistakes.

the way i see it, the STI and EVO are like an autopilot, it will take a much more skilled driver to drivethe brz fast than an sti fast. Any one that tracked a true rwd platform knows the benefits it has over an sti. the brz is a joy, it listens and has great feel, it is easy to rotate and to me, it is easier to point the car where you want and it takes more driver kill to do so. in the sti you just sort of point the wheel and mash the gas...dont get me wrong the STI was an absolute blast, but sometimes you just feel that the car is doing the work for you. i get much more joy out of the brz because it lets you know quickly that you're doing somehting wrong. while there is a long way to go until the BRZ is perfect, i think given the right brakes and suspension a brz would leave an STI for dead, granted if its not a built motor big turbo sti...but reasonable mods vs reasonable mods if we are talking not a drag race, the brz will definetly put up a serious fight.
