I remember the Celica GT and GTS were around $8000 difference in Canada and that was only for 40 HP extra in performance. Not worth it.
you were buying an extensively advanced engine as far as materials used. the same tech went into the LFA. Because of MMC technology tested with the celica gts 2zz-ge, toyota could make a v10 that could reved faster than any other production engine (extremely low internal friction engine), also allowed it weigh in as much as most v6 engines, while giving it a 9k redline.

I could start my car up in 25F weather, back my car out within a few seconds. bring the revs to 3k rpms and drop the clutch and race to work... i did that every day for almost 70k miles on a 13 year old car and i never once had an engine problem... the only problem that 2zz-ge had was shattering oil pumps when you went past 11k rpms, but that was an easy 400 dollar fix.

the difference between a celica gt and a celica gts is their engines, the celica gts also came fully loaded.

celica gt 1zz-fe engine is about $3000 for a new engine from the factory
celica gts 2zz-ge engine is about $8000 new from the factory

EDIT:yeah the 2zzge was over engineered in a lot of ways

heres a 2012 boss 302R connecting rod

2000 celica gts 2zz-ge connecting rod

and the best thing about the FA20, it seems like toyota took their time developing the engine and made sure that each and every part was well over engineered.
Beefy crank, beefy rods, strong pistons, high tech fueling system that will handle most aftermarket fueling needs up to 300whp, the engine is pretty light in itself, thick piston walls, great cooling system, i mean the list goes on with this engine and i love it
i have no doubts in the supercharger that TRD has to offer as it will fall WELL below the block's potential

lucky for the states the gts what not a whole lot more. and the 40 hp was put down well with the 6 speed. I would laugh at friends with the GT and ask why the did jut not go buy a corolla. And i think the gts back in 2000 came fully loaded. leather seats, moon roof, better speakers, weather package, better battery.

Only things I didn't like about the 2zz... lift bolts snap, Roller rocker on only one part of the cam lobes, and narrow rod journals. Healthy for NA, no doubt. But the Nissan VVL sr20ve and honda K series are better engines overall imho. The SR being archaic in comparison, yet very strong. The K series is... an amazing engine overall.

The FA20 has impressed me. And a lot of the reasons people don't like it is part of the appeal to me. I like the way it sounds. I think the torque output is great for a 2.0. Thrifty redline without feeling like you need to constantly wrap it out... And it feels like a great engine with character.

I am not a fan of the inconsistent power delivery. And it could use another 200hp. But it seems like they did a good job mechanically on the overall setup.

Before you come in here and start with the "This isn't the same thing as tuning a production car" blah blah blah. You're correct! It's infinitely harder! Toyota can make this happen in a big way.

I understand the need to bench race and speculate, but it's not really helping. Sit back, relax and enjoy your car. When the kit hits the street it will either work for you or it won't. If it doesn't it is a great thing that so many companies have other solution s available.
one thing is building an engine that was MEANT to be supercharged vs adding a supercharger to an engine that is the worst case scenario for adding FI.
I wouldn't doubt those engineers EVER but it doesn't mean they started with the most logical project to add power.

I never said they started this project with Forced Induction in mind. What I was saying is, when they figure out a solution I would feel comfortable knowing that is well thought out for the engine we have in the car.
