Yeah. They are used for a few things. To 'feel' flow and visualize 3d flow. Then to find dead flow spots by 'filling' them. Partly through recording cfm changes, partly through listening for the sound of detached flow. You can make flow gains by adding material too.

Neat development tool I just read about. I guess this is why practical head porting is part art.

Has anyone ever gone into a auto parts store that had the K&N display that had something similar? like it'd "show" that the K&N flowed better because with the stock filter it couldn't lift the balls but with the K&N it could...

Different flow balls. I'm talking about tiny precision metal balls of different sizes on thin metal rods.

Toyota 1NR-FE comes ported from the factory with CFD done on it. I like the sound of that better than "artwork".

If pros can get a 60% improvement on a Hayabusa, pretty sure they could outperform Toyota on the 1NR...

The quantifiable 'what' are CFM/velocity increases. The 'how' is the artwork. But it's still all done on a flowbench.

Experimental > theoretical (?)

Speaking of which, you get my mention for the aero thread?

Free, Open source, CFD!

Not all about flow though, at least not if you want to drive on the street.

Yes, also velocity. Also where the flow is in the lift range of the valve. I'm learning about what the serious guys can do. In extreme cases they will 'erase' a port by welding and redo it straighter, smoother, faster.

One of the purposes of the flow balls is test filling areas that are causing detached flow. So filling and re-shaping the area can get a flow and velocity gain. More air, better charge turbulence.

However CFD is shit-tons more appealing to me. If I ran a home made 3 shop-vac powered flow bench in my apartment I'm pretty sure my neighbours would join together to toss me off my balcony.

Did you check out the program that guy used for the aero model? I don't know a damn thing about Linux/Unix os or virtual machines...

I'll be glad when this new parts hype settles so I can see some real results, and some reliability after some serious driving. It all looks cool and sounds great, but I want it to last.

Granted, you have to pay to play...but I want my money to go as far as it can.
@Dimman, what about a linux / unix os and virtual machine? Those things aren't too hard to setup and a number of linux flavors have a UI that's pretty easy to use. Hell, in some cases you can run a linux setup off a usb thumb drive. Might be able to do some leg work if it's something you're interested in. Just need some details. Sorry for butting in on your other discussion, just made me somewhat curious.
