This is not "news" by any stretch of the imagination. Probably a slow day for autoblog.

GM. What a tragic waste of so many resources and talented people. My family is in what should be the center of GMs target market. Married, professional, 2.2 kids, etc.... We have never even considered one of their products. And that is quite a sad commentary on the company.

The only reason the corvette has succeeded is because the program is separate from much of the gm drama.

The unfortunate business reality is that GM has zero (please correct me if I am mistaken) history of making small runs of vehicles profitably.

So much potential in a car company. Such flawed execution....

I owned a '98 V6 Camaro hardtop, it was a very competent car in the handling department - once modded for track duty and you dropped a couple hundred lbs off it. It in no way was a light weight car though and that's where I really am dissapointed in the 5th gen Camaro....huge step backwards from the 4th gen in terms of styling and handling besides the absurd weight increase. I can't imagine the other generations being worse to work on compared to the 4th gen though... kind of stupid how the mechancial parts were laid out and some of the issues the 4th generation F-bodies had when you tracked them - steering pump was a guaranteed failure point that has to be upgraded to a racing unit and have additional cooling.) The 4th generation may have been a pain to work on and designed by split personality genious/idiots, but it was pretty fun to drive in the corners and competent at it. I think the Corvette is the only thing GM puts out that truly gets better every generation and can be considered a sports car though.

I wouldn't mind if they designed a new Fiero and did it right...V6 motor in a light weight RWD chassis at an affordable price would be nice. And if there was an RS model you could say you drove an FRS (...Fiero RS...) LOL

Key thing is "doing it right"... do not have a lot of faith in GM putting out a sub $30k priced, lightweight, RWD, true sportscar....that is just not something they seem to be able to do.

Note to GM: Buy an NA miata, drive it, and then design your own car in a coupe version that could honestly be compared with it for agility and driving pleasure and weighs less than 2,800lbs... then get back with the public once you've done this.
Of course the chance of that happening is not very high...

Doesn't look too bad for a concept. I think the fr s concept was kinda ugly, now it's hot. Could be same for that. Tail end needs some work on it for sure.

If Chevy builds this car with a V-6 they will lose sales quickly on the V-6 Camaro.. so they cant really do that.. it will hurt business. The platform will maybe use a small displacment motor with a turbo.. they did a good job on building a L4 turbo in the cobalt SS, only problem was it was FWD.. which is a fail in the handling sports department of cars. Although it was still considered nimble by a couple of magazines. But I do see some similarites to the euro designs such as BMW. America is adopting the euro look big time, both Ford and Chevy are doing it. As far as the new Corvette Stingray is concerned, I've seen it, and yes I actually consider it sexy. For some reason though.. the evolution of the car seems to lack characteristics of its predacessors. I like tradition, it keeps you intact with the rich history that the car has. Back in its Hay day, it was king you know. Now it just seems to blend in with other cars.. kinda sad.

I agree that knowing the history if a car is always good I'm waiting for Ford to try the 4cyl turbo lightweight mustang again! Such a great idea but in the era of cubic inches it didn't last long. And I must give Toyota credit most of the time when a car is brought back it is ruined other good mentions for doing it right is the Ford gt50 and the viper (granted the viper was more like a smoke break) I also liked the idea of the prowler going for the old 34 Ford look in a new car... But execution was a flop on that one.

The title of this should be:

"GM to ATTEMPT FRS rival, fails horribly"

I really can't imagine them giving this a turbo if they want to price it to compete with the 86. People seem to forget that all the turbo'd sports cars that we know and love from the '90s cost twice as much as the FRS, at least. My guess is that this will just be another NA 4-cyl. If they make a turbo version, I'd bet on it being $35k or more.

Nothing wrong with that though, I have no problem with all the other car companies scrambling to make small RWD coupes.

I have to agree this isn't their market they make great trucks and the Corvette and Cadillac they have their market old people love the Cadillacs and I think they have had some really cool caddys like the xlr and the ctsv the Corvette love it or hate it is a legend that has lasted longer than anything else and is still going strong. Their trucks can be found on almost any construction site and they just don't seem to die with must buyers not even worried about ones over 75k miles.

I honestly dont think they will try to copy ft86. They did try to do their own fwd compact rockets which wasnt good. If anyone in gm corporate office still have any brain left then they will do a rwd mini muscle car with rear independent suspension powered by turbo i4 or small v6. My guess is they will use the 2.5 and 2.0t from ATS. They might codevelop a car under ATS to fight 1 series and A3 sedan. The question is, given the american mindset if bigger the better, can they make a case for these? They will need to attract new market base as, trust me, their traditional market's reaction will be "for 2 grands more i can get the BIGGER and BETTER camaro/ats." It looks like even ats is a tight squeeze below cts. Being one generation newer helps now but i really want to see what happens after they have a new cts.

GM made the most potent fwd car of its time, the cobalt SS Turbo, which blew the doors off all the hot hatches, and most sports cars, with 300hp and LSD from the factory, for 25k
