lifter tick?

I have 1500 miles and I'm getting a ticking from the driver side head. Sounds like a sticky lifter. Not on startup either which is odd... anyone else have this issue? I'm gonna bring it in this week its too loud to ignore it

The high pressure fuel pump (located on top of the driver's side head) makes a ticking noise that kind of sounds like a lifter tick. Could that be it? It is normal according to one of the Scion TSBs.

Lifter noise usually stays loud and it varies directly with engine RPM. I would guess that the fuel pump only ticks during some parts of the rpm range but not at others.

I don't know, but I would guess that this car doesn't have hydraulic lifters (probably bucket on shim), and that any valve lash would probably be pretty loud all the time.

You are correct.. Subaru's do not have lifters.

Use a stethoscope / screwdriver to pin point the noise...Great tool to have! I'm sure it's that pump though.

Part of this is normal and depending on how it sounds it may need the HP fuel pump but don't think its going to all go away. Reason is the HP fuel pump has a mini cam lobe that engages when the direct injectors are used thus making a noise (normal). Now some systems have excessive noise coming from the HP fuel pump (which yours sounds like it might) and the repair is to replace the fuel pump (per TSB). When the port injectors activate then the noise will go away but you would never know because you will be driving when this happens ( I have ran active test on the fuel systems had have verified the noise only occurs when direct injection is on). Just go in and tell then their is a TSB for the HP fuel pump and you have the same noise.

FYI:direct injection is on at idle and that's why its noticeable.

Stopped by the dealer today, showed them a video /w sound of course on how it sounds. Told them it's a god damn typewriter.

Their* input was that it possibly may be an engine block in which they'll need to swap engines.

If that's the case, ill be demanding a new FRS. Already had Burning oil, CEL issues /w idle, and now this. Iv'e held back long enough.

Whats your guy's input if its an engine block.

My input? You will not get a new car if they can fix it.

Replacing an engine isn't that big a deal. I'd be happy if mine would explode with about 35k miles on it.

@DarkCard any issues come from this? Everything just end up being pump? Mine has tick but seems to come from between pump and middle topside of engine. Freaky hehe.
